On Trolls

It's been awhile since I visited Usenet (too much noise to signal), but I recall some trolls there back in the day.

The word was first used on Usenet to refer to people who make controversial remarks to see what sort of reaction they get. Some want to see if they can rile things up, others want to see how many people they catch. The latter are playing the game of "Gotcha" and get awarded what are known as "Loki Points"* for each hapless sap they hook.

*Named after the Trickster Loki, as opposed to the Fire Loki or the Giant Loki.
