The Press Release Hyjacks.

Crothian

First Post
While it seems the firestorm is dieing down, each time a press release is made about the new PDF system, the nay sayers immediately come in and pick it apart. There are enough threads for that and I think it would be nice if the press release threads would be used for the press release and not just another place for people to complain.

Whiule I'm not a publisher, I could understand if they feel frustrated by their threads being brought immediately into this debate and away from their products. I've always felt the publisher forum should be one of the last places hyjacking is frowned upon.

I could understand them feeling frustrated too, insomuch as they aren't discussing the gaming content of the products.

But if these were a bunch of print products that used a new system such that they all had shoddy bindings, would you not think the consumers would have some point to complaining? Given that (in theory) the DRM is not to be separated from the rest of the product, it becomes an integral part of the product as much as the stat blocks, feats, and artwork are.

It's a message board. If they just want to post read-only messages, they can do it on their company webpage. ENWorld is read by many more people than any one company's webpage, though, so they can judge the tradeoff in their own minds- fewer readers, or many more who can comment on the press release if they so choose.

No publicity is bad publicity anyway. Everyone who visits boards like this one certainly knows what drivethru is by now, and most companies could only dream of getting the amount of free bumpage they get from discussion appearing in one of their press releases. Keeps their name near the top of the list. I doubt they mind.

But there are threads for this, plenty of threads. I just don't think that every thread remotely conected to this issue should be turned into this issue. If it was the posters intent to inform they should just post a link to the mega thread that has all the information in. Instead they pick apart the press release and behave less then kindly to the publisher.

Crothian, I pretty much agree with you but everyone is frustrated with this and you have to respect that. If there expressing there frustrations that's fine but…

Then something needs to be done, being rude isn't a solution to any problem other than having to many friends nor is it tolerated on this board.

Of course one would need examples and hearsay isn't it. No disrespect intended, if your world about it drawling a crowd you can always email moderators specifically with them. :)

Crothian: I do see your point, but at the same time, it's possible that the publisher may only read the thread that he or she has initiated. In that instance, it may be beneficial for them to know that there are some that object to the format. They might not be aware of it otherwise.

Also, quite frankly, I think it's been very informative (from a customer-relations point of view) how each publisher has responded to the comments.

After DTRPG has been around awhile, I'd guess that this issue will sort itself out.

An announcement has already been made about this in the Publishers forum. Rudeness is not tolerated, and there have already been several bannings.

Good, glad to see it. :)

Well not really I would rather see everyone staying nice to each other but if it takes examples it takes examples.

There have been more bans in the past couple of weeks or so than in the history of the site! We don't like doing it, we consider it a defeat instead of a success, but we're also not going to just let persistently rude people hang around making everyone else miserable. If there's anything that we hope folks have learned it's that the publishers are people, not just faceless companies. Folks have to find a way to air their greivances without being jerks about it.

Yes, there are a lot of them. But there's two points - one is that some folk feel that the topic is strongly linked to a larger issue that is very important. Another is that very large threads are intimidating. If you want to inform, you don't send someone to slog through the long and detailed discussion. You summariize for them, and then lead them to that discussion so they may see details if they wish.

Instead they pick apart the press release and behave less then kindly to the publisher.

That, of course, is uncalled for. One can harp on an issue without being overtly rude. :)
