The Rerisen Tower(DM: Iron Sky, Judge: ScorpiusRisk)

"Ah'm shoah thayat was heyim't Ah saw layast nayaht, Yimmy. Ah jus' know eyit."

"Ya got better eyes than mine mate. Couldn't see nothing through the bloomin' rain. Was all I could do just ta keep meself warm. Be glad ta get these blokes to their tower and have done with it, eh?," says Yimayngurr, shivering as he tends to some tea that he's boiling over the morning cook fire in a discarded tin can, and looking thoroughly miserable about the morning's senseless deaths.

[sblock=OOC]I'll post as soon as I can today, going to be rushing around until something like 10pm tonight, so it'll probably be 12 hours or more before I have a chance. I might be able to sneak more time in there, but we'll see. Gotta run.[/sblock]

"The weather itself isn't right," says Livia, still looking very shaken after having been dug out of the rubble. "I don't think any amount of caution on our parts is going to prevent more occurrences like this; we're not dealing with natural forces. Just how important is this tower?"
"As far as I'm concerned, the tower is just another contract. I gave my word I would go there, bring some supplies they wanted with me, and fix up anything that needed fixing. The mayor didn't even make it sound important, just said whenever I could get to it, as long as I didn't wait too long since the militia there are waiting for the food and a few other odds and ends we're supposed to be bringing."

Turning back to the Master Mason, he continues. It is clear that he is now convinced that the Master Mason is hiding something. His words clearly smolder with anger. "So is there anything else you can tell us before someone else gets killed?"
Mason seems on the edge of tears, visibly shaken by what has happened. "I never thought anything like this would happen. They mayor just said to head up there, bring the militia some supplies they need, and do any repairs that need to be done on the tower. He said that I wouldn't even need to take anyone for protection and now you all are saying there's things out in the night, unnatural storms... if we weren't carrying food for the militia, I'd be tempted to turn around right now."

She pauses and takes a deep breath to calm herself, then looks between the members of the party. "I won't hold it against you if any of you want to turn back now. I'll even pay you what I was planning on paying you. Right now, I just want to get to the tower. We have less than a day left to go and we already had the strange storm and the cliff face, the rest of the trip can't get any worse than that, can it?"

"The river is an hour or two ahead, maybe a bit more with all this mud, and the tower is probably five or six hours beyond that. We could be there before sunset if we push hard..."

The group does push hard and is rewarded with clearing skies and drying roads. A couple hours later, the group reaches the river...

[sblock=OOC]I'm taking off for the weekend, leaving tomorrow and back Saturday or Sunday. Please be sure your character sheets are all accurate and up to date(hopefully they'll all be approved to) for when I get back, 'cause :):):):):):) might be going down...[/sblock]

No sense turning back, we are closer to our destination now anyway. Just need to not stay so close to the cliff edge next time we camp.

"Gurk does not get paid to give up. We will take you to tower."

[sblock=ooc]I'm not very confident that my character will be approved soon. I don't even have one approval yet. I know it took about a month to get my LEB character approved. Gurk was only submitted for approval 9 days ago.[/sblock]

[sblock=Character Approvals]
As an FYI, there are 33 characters for L4W in the judge approval queue. Although most were submitted June 11th or more recently.

I hope to put a big dent in that number when I'm on vacation the first full week of July. [/sblock]

"I'm not going anywhere. You need me if trouble is truly waiting for us. I will do my best to keep more of your men from dying" Corvus says to Mason.

Corvus forms up at the front of the column, the human is dour and barks orders at the men to keep rank and if someone's lagging behind he is quick to snap at them. The warlord spots the river up ahead, he says "We should make sure our waterskins are full if this water's drinkable" he says, beginning to move towards it.

As the river becomes visible ahead through the trees, Mason motions for the craftsmen to stop with the wagon. "That rain was pretty heavy, let's give the horses a break and give me chance to make sure the bridge is ok and will support its weight. Between the cliff and the storm, can't be too careful."

The group leaves the wagon and the exhausted craftsmen behind and before long comes to the trees that lead to the bridge. "What are those, broken tree branches?" Mason says, squinting forward through the faint drizzle. "Gods!"

It does look for a second as though some of the trees have had branches fall, but as you get closer you that they are bodies hanging in the trees all round the clearing at the start of the bridge. Three hang from the stone arch over the near-end of the bridge, bodies swaying and dripping.

The group stops and stares, alert for signs of danger.

"Maybe the militia took out a band of bandits and left their bodies hanging by the river," Mason says, though she sounds far from sure. "I guess nothing to be learned from here, let's get a bit closer so I can at least get a view of the bridge."

You can see what looks like a low stone wall a short ways before the bridge, like the ancient, crumbled ruin of an old stone tower. "That's not the tower, thankfully!" Mason says.

The bridge itself is longer than many were expecting, stretching almost a hundred feet over the rain-swollen river. Stone pillars line the sides of the bridge. It looks like once they were all linked with chains, but now most of the chains have rusted and fallen away, leaving red streaks from the holes where they were anchored that make it look almost like the bridge itself is bleeding. Small stone gargoyles are placed atop the pillars, rain flowing from the gargoyles like tears or perhaps spittle.

The far side of it is obscured in mist, though there are large, still shapes standing on the far bank near the bridge.

"Carefully now, let's see what's going on here," Mason says, stepping forward, the stink of the hanging bodies making her wrinkle her nose.

Everyone let me know what you are doing(each of you pick only one and only open the related [ sblocks ] after you have decided):

[sblock=Hide in the forest]The forest is quiet and misty, water dripping from the black branches all around.[sblock=Stealth 18]You are hidden.[/sblock][/sblock]

[sblock=Keep your eye out on the forest around you for danger]The forest is quiet and misty, water dripping from the black branches all around.[sblock=Perception 15]Ravens sit perfectly still high in the trees all around you, watching with gleaming black eyes. [sblock=Perception 18]Dozens more circle high above the trees in the cloudy sky, silently...[/sblock][/sblock][/sblock]

[sblock=Try to see the far bank]The red bluffs of the far side are shrouded in heavy mist...[sblock=Perception 18]As you get closer, you can see that the figures on the far side seem to be statues, of men fighting lions and other beasts it would seem.[sblock=Perception 25]A robed figure slowly approaches through the mist on the other side, dozens of ravens flying around him at almost ground level, silent, almost seeming to blend with the mist...[/sblock][/sblock][/sblock]

[sblock=Examine the bridge's structure]The bridge is wet and some of the wood might be rotting...[sblock=Dungeoneering 20]...but it looks like it should still support the wagon.[/sblock][/sblock]

[sblock=Examine the bridge's gargoyles]They are creepy and malformed, though that may be from time and erosion...[sblock=Perception 20 or Dungeoneering 15(pick one)]It looks like the gargoyles are part of the pillars, carved out of the same rock, not placed atop them.[sblock=Arcana 15]They don't seem to be magical, you're pretty sure they're just ornamental.[/sblock][/sblock][/sblock]

[sblock=Examine the bodies to see who they were]They smell terrible and they're beginning to bloat...[sblock=Perception 18]Upon closer examination, they don't look like bandits - few scars, decent health, women and children amongst them - more like villagers...[sblock=Religion 23]These things reek of unholiness and undeath![/sblock][/sblock][/sblock]

[sblock=Examine the bodies for wounds or signs of struggle][sblock=Heal 15]They don't seem to have any wounds...[sblock=Heal 20]These people were already dead when they were hung![/sblock][sblock=Religion 23]These things reek of unholiness and undeath![/sblock][/sblock][/sblock]

[sblock=Examine the broken tower]It drops ten feet into food-deep water... it's dark and there, could be something hiding...[sblock=Perception 15]Upon closer examination, nothing down there but some frogs and a couple rusting out old tools and weapons.[/sblock][/sblock]

Wait here, this one will tread the paths of shadow and see if it safe to examine the bridge closer. Kaz says, stealthy moving through the rain by way of the trees. He heads to view the bodies first.

Kaz quickly returns, his usually impassive face looks distressed. We are among bad tidings. Those bodies are like that of villagers. They were woman and children as well as men. I sense unholiness...evil...undeath. We should walk carefully, the minions of chaos are close at hand.
