The Stuff of Dreams (Orsal Judging)

OOC: If Wilbur doesn't break loose Ryland will dust himself off and say, "Everything's under control folks, we're just taking this man to the authorities." He'll also scout the crowd for any intervening on Wilbur's behalf. IF Wilbur breaks loose, he'll try another grapple.

Wilbur screamed as Devlin twisted the bolt that had embedded itself in his side. He seemed to flutter on the edge of consciousness. Devlin muttered something to Wilbur that was unintelligible to the rest of the patrons, who were rapidly scattering to the far corners of the room. There was much yelling, and several cries of alarm, and Ryland heard at least one relatively soft voice above the din say, "Markal, ye run and get the Watch right now"

As Devlin announced to all that Wilbur was under arrest, he became aware that a large man, who was attempting to look intimidating with little success, was approaching with the innkeeper close behind. The innkeeper seemed to be doing his best to keep his fears in check. "Mr. Devlin", he quietly announced, "We don't generally allow weapons to be displayed in the public areas here. And I'll have to see some proof of your authority to arrest one of my customers."

Thinking quickly, Devlin turns toward the innkeeper, positioning himself where he can see both him and Wilbur. He keeps his rapier pointed at the ground.

"My apologies, good sir. I wouldn't dream of drawing my weapon if this man didn't threaten me first. Please contact Commander Vagan of the City Watch, he is our representative of authority. We will detain this criminal in our room, away from your fine, upstanding patrons, until the Commander arrives." Devlin tries to keep the innkeeper and his security guard distracted and away from Wilbur so Enialis and Ryland can lead him out of the common room.

ooc: Not sure which one you want to use, El Jefe, so here's two checks. Diplomacy = 29, Bluff = 14

While Devlin spoke, Wilbur and Enialis struggled a bit more. "You lousy, stinking, I'll rip your head off!", exclaimed the little man. "I'll! I'll!"...and then he slumped, silent in Enialis's arms, overcome by his injury and his exertions.

The innkeeper seemed suspicious at first, but Devlin's demeanor and mention of Officer Vagan won him over. "Well, I don't think he'll be any more trouble, and ye woudn't want to have that out when the Watch shows up. Why don't ye let Timbor here see to him, and ye can come over to the bar and have a drink to steady ye'r nerves." Enialis laid the unconscious thug on the floor, and the broad-shouldered bouncer started tending to him. As the trio of adventurers wandered over to the bar area, the innkeeper strode to the middle of the common room and announced to the terrified merchants huddled in the corners, "My apologies for this unfortunate disturbance. As you can see, everything is well in hand. The authorities will be here any moment. Once this is sorted out, the Tower Inn would like to extend the courtesy of the evening meal tonight, no charge to anyone who had to witness this unfortunate event."

Seeing that the danger had largely passed and that the promise of a free meal beckoned, all but a couple of the patrons resumed their places at the tables and their conversation. The two most frightened found some other place to be.

Devlin found the Tower's strong drink to be fine stuff, indeed. "I hope yer next encounter with Officer Vagan goes smoother than the last one", offered the innkeeper.[sblock=OoC: ]Some killer rolls there, Dungannon. Made it by that much![/sblock]

Devlin smiles at the innkeeper, "We've worked out our differences and come to a mutually agreeable accord. I apologize again for the disturbance. I tried to talk him into leaving quietly, but he insisted on violence." Devlin shakes his head and takes a drink before continuing. "I hope he's learned a lesson, although I fear it may have come too late." Devlin turns his attention to his drink while he ponders what he's going to say when Vagan shows up.

Timbor picked up Wilbur like a big rag doll, and laid him out on one of the longer tables. After physicking him for a bit, the big man announced, "Uh, figure he'll live. Though he may wish he didn't for a bit."

Just as Devlin and the others began to gather their wits, a lad of about 13 burst into the inn, with Officer Vagan and four of his men close on his heels. The boy pointed at Wilbur, still lying by Timbor, and exclaimed, "There! That man and...", as he pointed to Devlin, "that one, they were the two that were fighting!"

"I should have known it was you three", remarked Vagan. "Ok, hands up, no sudden moves." He addressed the other officers: "Standard search. Just focus on the weapons, we'll deal with any little stuff later."

Timbor gave Vagan a nod of recognition. "Uh, I think this one started it. He's been causing trouble all day, we shoulda threw him out earlier", he said, indicating Wilbur, who was at least breathing noiselessly, which was an improvement on his previous disposition.

Devlin downs the rest of his drink, then smiles at Vagan. "Evening, officer. Glad you could get here so quickly. The man on the table there, his name is Wilbur, is the one we believe killed Flodal Thursby. We were trying to bring him to you quietly, but the little guy just insisted on making a big fuss here in the common room."

The small gnome walks up to the officer in charge and murmurs just loud enough for the man to hear, 'Officer Vagan, we might want to talk in private. This guy is just a flunky. We don't need his boss to get tipped off. He'll be sure to hear about his. We need to find out where he is from Wilbur soon"

Both Devlin and Ryland started to speak, but were met with a rather steely gaze from Vagan. "The laws concerning vigilantes are very strict, here", he began. "One may defend oneself if attacked, and one may use force to detain a criminal, but not deadly force." He glanced over the feathered end of the bolt still protruding from Wilbur's side as his men quickly relieved the adventurers of their weapons. "This would appear to be quite deadly...this man is fortunate to still be alive." He approached Devlin. "Now, one at a time, explain yourselves. And you'd better hope that nobody tried to impersonate an Officer of the High Court of Orussus."

One by one, he took the adventurer's stories while his men interviewed the innkeeper, his bouncer, and some of the other guests.[sblock=OoC: ]In your next post, put down exactly what your character tells Vagan...their "stories". He will listen to Ryland and Devlin seperately. If you start to wander off about how menacing Wilbur looked or how Wilbur is part of a bigger conspiracy, he will first bring you back to the facts...what you saw, what you did, what others did...then entertain "elaborations" up to a point.[/sblock]
