The Stuff of Dreams (Orsal Judging)

"All this for the orb? Fatwon, you wouldn't have happened to, maybe, misrepresented its value to us, did you?" Devlin eyes the half-orc, watching for any sign of trouble.

Becoming frustrated, Ryland points towards Brigit and casts hypnotism. He demands of her, " Did you kill Archer or have Thursby kill him?"

Repent, repent! The End is nigh!

OOC: Hello Dungannon, Salix. In light of El Jefe's extended absence, it seems that this adventure is in need of good finish. I've been following it with interest from the beginning, and Orsal has handed the substitute DM-ship off to me, in hopes that I can give it the bold finish it deserves. You guys have spent way too long on this for it to fizzle out. So... on with the climax!

Ryland's voice wavers hypnotically and his hands move dizzingly as he addresses Brigit. She stares at him, baffled by his outburst and his blunt question. "No! What? No!" Kamdar just laughs and laughs. But Jobe gets up from his seat, stares directly into Ryland's eyes, and says in his high, soft voice, "No... No I did not kill that man..." Kamdar stops laughing, looks at Jobe, and starts laughing again, this time even louder. Brigit seems confused at first, but then realization dawns on her. With hurt in her voice, she says, "So my own advocates don't even believe me? Why would I have you make this transaction for me if I didn't trust you?" She looks to Devlin, her eyes pleading, "I don't like how your little friend is treating me, Mr. Devlin. Surely at least someone here is on my side?"

Kamdar has stopped laughing, now he is simply smiling. Smiling and waiting.

[sblock=OOC: ]Ryland's hypnotism will last another two rounds (which will actually take place during Brigit's words), but obviously only Jobe was affected. Please, feel free to interrupt Brigit if you so desire.

Devlin's question to Fatwon is not forgotten, but Ryland's spell interrupted the flow of conversation. Fatwon looks prepared to answer Devlin's question about the value of the orb as soon as the 3 "negotiators" work through this new difficulty in their already strained relationship.[/sblock]

Devlin steps toward Brigit. "It's nothing personal, Ms. O'Shally. In our business we must suspect everyone until we can clear them. Surely you understand how professionals must act. Here, have a drink to settle yourself. You too, Jobe." Devlin offers both Brigit and Jobe one of the "doctored" beverages.

OOC: Devlin needs to make a Bluff check against Brigit's Sense Motive, DC:24.
[sblock=If he passes...]Brigit looks gratefully at Devlin and thanks him, taking the proferred drink and sipping at it. She calms down and continues to follow the conversation.[/sblock]
He failed...
Brigit gives him a pouty look and says, "Well then, Mr. Devlin, I think that I should suspect you. How do I know you haven't poisoned these drinks? No, I think I'm quite fine on my own here."

Jobe snaps out of his hypnotism and looks surprised that he is standing up. He glances at Ryland, confused, and then takes the drink offered by Devlin as he sits down. He does not imbibe the beverage, for now at least.

Kamdar, still smiling his fat, toothy, half-orc grin, interjects, "All finished then? Let's get down to business. Mr. Devlin, your eloquent language implies that I am cheating you. I assure you, this is not the case. The object you carry is indeed quite valuable, thanks to its inherent precious worth and its magical properties. But what you are missing is its inherent historical and political value, which makes it invaluable to certain individuals. I am in the business of dealing with these individuals. I am also in the business of protecting and obtaining these kinds of artifacts. I think 10,000 gold is perfectly reasonable for the services you and Ms. O'Shally have rendered thus far, especially considering I already paid for Ms. O'Shally's services once." Kamdar winks at the attractive young lady. "As for Archer, I'm afraid I can't give you a definite answer to that question. I suspect that Thursby is Archer's murderer. I remember him always playing with a dagger, but the night I tried to strike a deal with him, he was without it. It seems to have found its way into Archer's back. Precisely how or why is of no particular concern to me."

Kamdar pauses, waiting for more dialogue. Then he continues, "If you have brought the orb, I have brought the money. Shall we make the exchange?" His menacing tusks protruding from his lips are accompanied by more sharp teeth his smile grows even wider.

About 15 minutes has gone by since the start of the meeting. Devlin and Ryland expect Vagan to arrive in about 5 minutes, maybe more.

EDIT: Magenta text highlights Kamdar's testimony on Archer's murder.

ooc: Devlin's Bluff = 21, not quite good enough.

"I don't care if you trust me or not, Brigit, as long as I get paid. Speaking of which, I'd like to see the money now." The rogue returns his attention to Fatwon.

Show me the Money

Kamdar's smile does not diminish. "But of course." He produces the same bag of coins that Ryland and Devlin saw the day before. "One thousand Dragons, all pure platinum." Brigit's eyes go wide. Fatwon allows the bag to be inspected, it contains ten smaller bags with 100 Dragons each. No tricks. Jobe twitches and looks anxiously at Devlin, waiting for him to show the orb. He absentmindedly takes a sip of his drink, then he jerks it away from his mouth and shoots Brigit a glance, wondering if she was right about the drinks. Fatwon is completely cool. He waits for the two Trouble-Fixers to show him what he came for.

Devlin takes his time, removing the ten smaller sacks and opening them individually and lining them up on the table. Once he's satisfied with the count, he turns to his partner. "Ryland, if you please."

Insides of Steel?

As Devlin counts the money, both of our heroes keep an eye on Jobe, waiting for the poison to kick in. It never does. Did Jobe not drink enough? Did Bellam cheat Devlin out of 330 gold? Does Jobe have insides of steel? Neither Devlin nor Ryland could know.
