D&D 5E The warlock is a "better" wizard than a wizard

It's "details" in that the post you nitpicked was essentially saying wizards take their time to solve a problem with a perfect spell and warlocks just solve it with PewPew.

The game mechanics aren't important to the sentiment of the statement.

For example I could tell you there is no such monster as an "orgre" so we wouldn't know if Hold Person would work or not, but that really wouldnt have anything to do with what you were trying to say, which is that certain spells only target certain things.
Well, you have a point.

But perhaps you didn't get mine.

See... the warlock has a limited tool set, and must be very creative with those tools to solve various problems. The wizard just pick one of a gazillion of almost perfect tools, goes "voila!" and expects everyone to be impressed.

Now that's a bit dramatic, but it's just the other side of the coin of Mistwell's post, in which his disdain for the warlock was plain. I thought that was unfair, and decided to voice my discontent by popping his post, and showing that he was wrong about the details - and that's where the devil lives, if what I am told is true.

I'm still waiting for a decent reason why firebolt can target objects and ray of frost can't.
I use "Arcana skill stunts" to improvisationally modify spells. Using a Ray of Frost on an UNATTENDED object is no big deal, and I might even allow an Easy DC to do it.

This is a 1e thing, and I would allow it but havent seen it yet: a player can invent their own new spell. Just write it up and if looks fun and balanced, good to go. I would probably require downtime for it. But I might just let them have it because I love Spell Research creativity.

The Mage, a refflufed warlock with a little boost to make it more of a meeting point between warlock and wizard. Have fun.
I am hoping for an official full Psion class that uses the Warlock spellcasting mechanics as a chassis.

I hope the base class is vanilla flavor "power of the mind".

It should be easy to refluff this Psion for an all-purpose Mage for various settings.

I'm pretty sure it was just a joke. It even had a smiley emoji. But I like your phrasing so I'll say you have a discussion worthy point here and it might have been better made earlier in place of the barb.

is the permission to access on purpose?
(je sais pas ce que ça veux dire, fac j'imagine que oui?)

Anyways, If it means that you can mod the document, dont worry about it. :)

if it means you cant access the document, I'll try to see what I can do.

EDIT: I'll just add the pdf here.

I meant that I couldn't access it, it was an "access if given permission only" situation. Thank you for the PDF, I will look at it :)

Just some things I noticed.

1) In the spellcasting section, it says that slots recharge on a long rest; I'm assuming that should be short rest.

2) I feel like +Int to attack might make Blade Pact a bit too desirable compared to Orb and Tome. Orb could maybe use an upgrade that lets the familiar attack as a bonus action at 5th level. Or Tome could maybe get Arcane Escalation for free.

3) Do the school tags on the Arcane Mysteries reference any other feature?

4) "Tradition" says when you reach 2nd level, should say 1st.

5) Turning the 1/LR spell invocations into being slotless is great, that's one of my favorite warlock house rules.

6) Arcane Catapult maybe should be triple range, rather than a straight 300 ft. Touch cantrips suddenly becoming 300' could be weird.

Yup, I copied/pasted from the wizard rules, I forgot to change that one.

I though about it. I also though about making it a Mystery you could take as a Blade-mage, but I feel there's already so much taxes for blade-lock that it would be too much. Since we now have the Battlesmith and Hexblade who use their casting stat for weapon attack, I think it is reasonable.

For now, I only added the Invocations from the PHB. From Tasha's and Xan's, there's a lot of new Invocations that boost Tome and Chain pact. So I think that it evens out the difference between all of them.

I dont know yet.

Maybe the archetypes will give 1 free Invocation from their school? That would be kinda unfair for the archetypes not related to school?
4) "Tradition" says when you reach 2nd level, should say 1st.
Indeed. Another copy/paste error.

6) Arcane Catapult maybe should be triple range, rather than a straight 300 ft. Touch cantrips suddenly becoming 300' could be weird.
Agreed. Maybe double the range and touch cantrip now have a range of 30' ?

I'll make the change and update.

Thanks.

Another idea I had for the blade-mage was to

1) remove the INT as attack stat
2) Create an Invocation that lets the blade-mage replace the initial attack roll or save of cantrips to a melee spell attack using the range of their arcane weapon.

Makes sense. I do think there's some room in here for some other new invocations, leveraging some of the wizard concepts. Invocations that benefit from having spells in the spell book, for example. Or maybe some subclass specific ones.
