The Whole I'll HAve to Rebuy My Stuff! Argument...

I don't understand the whole "Wizards is making me rebuy my stuff!" argument...

WOTC isn't going to roll up and take your old stuff...

4e isn't going to come out all at once with a thousand dollars worth of merchandise...

I'm guessing it'll be the same release schedule (maybe slightly faster.)

Were people planning just to stop buying gaming stuff as of August 08? (if so can't they still do so?)

I just don't get that argument...

However, if you switch to 4E and don't play 4E, much of the 3.5 product isn't going to see use.

Sure, I'll probably get a lot of use out of my Eberron books like Forge of War & The Five Nations. However, I probably will see little use from the Book of Nine Swords or the Expanded Psionics Handbook.

Right now, given than an update to Eberron seems far in the future, I'm contemplating sticking with 3.5 for my Eberron game until the core details are updated. I'll play 4E, and maybe even run a game specifically for 4E (Greyhawk has been whispering "use me" lately, for example), if I decide to use 4E.

I have almost never touched my non-adventure 3E stuff since 3.5 was released.

Adding "...so that I can stay current and not be isolated by the current gaming scene" to the end of it is likely what is more often meant by that phrase. Those who want new material compatible with the new edition will need to upgrade, no question, because the majority of D&D players in the U.S. are usually playing the most recent thing.

However, truth is that as long as there is an SRD, it's not really needed to upgrade - all the base rules will be available. Heck, I played with just the SRD from 2003 to 2006, because I couldn't see myself buying the new books just to make a new character. Luckily I got them as a gift, because I would have been somewhat upset if I have purchased them at Christmastime, like I was planning to. :)

Shrug.. Maybe it's because I buy multiple game systems? I have a bunch of gurps stuff and WOD stuff... Most of it never sees use because I normally play D&D...

I strongly suspect that I'll be able to mine my 3/3.5e stuff for ideas and forward convert stuff that I'd like to play with, once I see how they're doing the PHB classes.

And Scribbles is right, nobody comes around to take your stuff. Not even Games Workshop does that. :)

Okay, well, of course I still have my 3e stuff. But if I choose to play 4e, especially since some changes look much more drastic than I initially anticipated, using my old stuff is going to be problematic if I am talking crunch at all.

Yeah but you're still not "rebuying" all your stuff...

You're not going to get a bill in a few months from WOTC stating for services past rendered...

At best i think the argument is just a syntax error... :p

I mean I can see.. oh darn Wizards is going to tempt me to buy MORE stuff...

I can even understand the argument Darn wizards has made my current stuff outdated...

But the I have to rebuy all my stuff argument, just doesn't seem like a logical argument...

I have to say that I can understand why gamers would not agree with it being a problem for them, but I have difficulty with gamers unable to see why its a problem at all.

If my gaming style is to be a core D&D player, so I can participate in RPGA, conventions etc etc, and in an 8 year period WotC has changed official "core" rules 3 times, I think they are absolutely correct in being upset. That has "forced" them to buy 3 new sets of rule books or abandon their preferred style of play to participate in official conventions, RPGA etc etc.

Certainly, WotC is not holding a gun to their head and saying they have to buy a new set of rule books. But WotC only promotes and supports the current "official" rules, so if WotC is an impotrant part of your gaming hobby, you want to receive support, you have to buy the new books.

And with 3 new editions in 8 years, many players believe that WotC is releasing new editions to soon.

I don't understand why that concept and reasoning is hard for some to understand.

YMMV

I don't have a problem with anyone feeling that the edition is too soon.

It's just the idea that they have to "rebuy" all their stuff.

All they're doing is buying MORE stuff.
