Guitars which vanquish evil. Are the guitars played by ninjas? My game clearly needs more anime. :)

Legend of Black Heaven ( "Hard Rock will Save the Space" ) is pretty decent, but not quite as exciting as you'd expect. It's more of a story than a Hard Rock Action thing. Good for a rental, I'd say...

I do think it's important to realize that the mid to late '80's was a time of RAMPANT accusations of Satanism, etc. Think of the protests against heavy metal music and KISS, etc. Much like the '50's protests against Elvis's provocative dancing, the mania has faded, and it's not really much of an issue today for those it wasn't already an issue for back in the day.

It's a game. Removing overt references to real-world myth did next to nothing to call back those reading Chick Tracts to the D&D game. If an individual's faith prevents them from differentiating between imagination and practice, then D&D isn't the only thing that's going to risk their soul (90% of videogames, for instance, wherein you "kill" your enemy paves the path to damnation through thousands of imaginary murders).

If all games can be dangerous just by being games, than D&D can be dangerous regardless of it's real-world references. If no games can be dangerous just by being games, then D&D is no more dangerous than any other game.

In other words, it's more about how the faithful view games in general, than anything specific about D&D.

This sounds like teh awesome.

Hmm... Rock band + D&D adventuring group... barbarian on drums... bard as singer/base guitar... sorcerer as lead guitar, with druid on bass?

Hmmm...

You forgot the rogue as the band manager. :)

All RPGs are dangerous because they create a form of artificial experience that can shape a minds perceptions.

They are dangerous like all cars are dangerous. They have a huge potential for misuse if the driver or DM choose. The players also can hurt themselves depending on their mental state when they come into the game, just like I can stick my arm out a car window. The flaw in this analogy is that players can leave at any time, unlike car passengers.

The danger I see is not religious, just an awareness that RPGs DO have an effect on the mind. Visualization and imagination can change the way you think. In many cases it is good, some its bad.

I think this is a move back to the roots, so to speak. Looking at Conan, Elric and Fahfrd and Grey Mouser you see that they are a bunch of of anti heroes all of them. None of them were motivated by the need to do "good" and none of them were people you would like to spend too much time with, too different degrees.

I think the points of lights can be interpretated that some places are very evil and some are more medieval Europe style pragmatic. A hero in a world like that shines like a beacon because noone expects her.

I also think that we don't have to think about fundies this time. D&D is a small hobby, the kind of attention seeking fundamentalists already have Harry Potter and Grand Theft Auto to think about.

PS: About D&D making people crazy: If you are grounded in reality it takes far more than D&D to unhinge you. If you have a vulnerability, D&D can make you lose touch with reality but then if D&D wouldn't something else would.

Was my previous note on keeping real-world religion out of this somehow unclear?

Let me make it clear:

Next person who brings real-world religion into this thread gets an involuntary vacation!

Any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

In short, I would rather that D&D start off as generically neutral, and then over time and in-game choices, you choose whose side you are on and what you are willing to do get achieve your goals...but really, that's never been the way the game's core assumption works, so I don't know why it should change now. Maybe I am playing the wrong game.

I think you just described Sorcerer.
