They'd revoke my D&D gamer license if they knew....

. . . that I dislike The Lord of the Rings and nearly everything Gygax and Arneson took from it for D&D (except when those elements have been seriously reinvented).

. . . that I think the Monty Python films are shab-eriffic compared to the series which no-one ever seems to quote (beyond the parrot sketch).

. . . that my primary inspirations for gaming come not from the themes and tropes of fantasy but from the themes and tropes of science fiction, especially of the variety that examines the impact of social phenomena rather than technological development.

. . . that I've never been to either an Australian-style (all gaming, all the time!) or American-style (gaming, seminars, dealer's rooms, product launches!) convention, and that I probably never will.

. . . that my favourite D&D campaign to date was a Planescape campaign with a majority of evil PCs, and where my human alienist who underwent some spontaneous mutation was the most normal character. Hell, even a fill-in PC who was a human fighter/rogue ended up donning a helm of opposite alignment and declaring himself a paladin of Cyric . . .

I have never read Tolkein.

I have no desire to read Tolkein, ever.

Try and take my license, I got 23rd level dwarve Wizard, 11th Level Human fighter, and a hombrew campaign world ready to take your buttocks out.

I only run (and house rule) D&D is because, in any of its incarnations, it is the core role-playing experience that most RPGers are use to and thus is a center for our shared experience and familiarity with rules and tropes. And in that process it has become the ruleset I feel the most comfortable with to do wholesale tweaking to fit the kind of rules/setting I like.

Because of this, D&D campaigns last longer and have better play experience for me and my friends (or friends I make through gaming).

But if I thought some other game would have that kind of instant familiarity and longevity I would use it in a second.

Do you actually play D&D or some D20 fantasy system of some kind?

Yep, I do. I played 3E and 3.5, Conan OGL, Grim Tales, and True 20. After about 3 months, I realized I didn't like the core assumptions of 3E, and modified and tweaked the system to better reflect a lower magic, less magic item reliant game (class-based defense bonus that stacked with AC, tone down casters and require spellcasting rolls, feat every 2 levels). Problem is, you have to do that with EVERY NPC, monster, and character in the game, which made the long prep times of 3.x D&D even longer. So while my mods played well, the workload-to-fun ratio made it not worth it. I do like True 20 since it has most of my assumptions built in, but haven't played enough of it yet to know. So while I'll play D&D/D20 stuff, I don't run it anymore.

My biggest beef with dragons lies with the fact that here you have a damn near perfect engine of destuction saddled with an intelligence and wisdom so high that it almost begs to be played contrary to its design. I want my rampaging, pilliaging, I'm-going-to-burn-down-your-villiage-just-because-it's-a-Monday dragons!

And yeah, the whole "color-coded alignment" does indeed get old as is their penchant for procreating with whatever isn't nailed to the floor...

I love the aberrations, the Far Realm, the giants, the fiends (by and large), Greyhawk, Planescape but loathe furries and fey (as a PC I'm prone to involuntary genocidal fits when I see these... :p ).

They would take away my D&D license if they knew

I like going to Cons and bath regularly.

I like dragons and dungeons just fine, but hate spell casting rangers. I never once read where Aragorn cast a spell.

I like sorcerers but hate old crotchity wizards. Seriously why is every wizard old.

I love Drow, but hate what Wizards has done to them. Thank you Drizzt

I:
Hate dungeons
Like dragons, but not the ones in the Monster Manual
Think that humans are the best monsters
Hate D&D/Tolkien elfs (but like his dwarfs)
Spell elfs as elfs and dwarfs as dwarfs (the 'v's are another Tolkienism)
Ignore more than half of the Monster Manual
Have longbows as exotic weapons and hand crossbows as simple weapons
Like gunpowder in my campaign worlds and make guns Martial proficiencies
Don't use (or even like) the D&D cosmology
Hate Epic characters and loathe (with a a passion that will outlive this mortal frame) Epic settings

The Auld Grump

...that I despise halflings and kender, dislike elves, and ain't too crazy about dwarves neither, but am filled with a passionate and completely irrational love for all things gnomish.
