theyll never find me here, teehee

Drill two holes in the shield, one eye-hole and one just big enough for the tip of a wand. An illusionist gnome hangs on to the shield, peering through the hole with wand a-ready....

:D This is fun.

they were trying to figure out is there was a way they could cut out a small section of the shield (nothing too big, just kinda like a sight-box) and then cast an illusion over that section so the shield looks whole. this could give the assassin the assassin the 3rounds he needs to make death attack.

and drawmack, they never intended for the assassin to stay on the shield, only to sit there long enuf to either get a death attack off, or in case that cant happen, a sneak attack, and then he would tumble off and behind the baddy...

thanks for the imput sofar....what im thinking is that the fighter gets no shield bonus to AC as long as gnome is there. the fighter would also get a cummulative -2 starting on the second round of combat due to the awkward weight on his counterbalancing arm (i doubt they teach you how to fight with an extra 35 pounds on yor arm in training in the offchance U are gonna find yorself in this situation :p)

the gnome (barring the illusioned-peephole) would have to make a spot check (DC10+defenders AC+defenders level) when he pops out to quickly find a place to put his dagger. the gnome would then make attack roll as normal.

this sound fair?

Good lord!

All they really need to do is come up with a spell that reduces the gnome's weight, and... and...

Good LORD!

I almost didn't reply to this, but I couldn't help it.

...and the fighter gets his shield bonus, the weightless gnome gets to assassinate, and... and...

I have to.... I have to use this.

How about a new shield special quality- Gnomeholding?

Physics wise, it sounds like a huge stress on one mans arm, you know holding a large steel shield with a 35 pund G-nome hiding behind it. But in a fantasy world, and having a character with a 24 Strength, and a shield made of Mithral which halves the normal weight, making a large steel(Mithral) shield weigh about 7 lbs. So physically people are saying that a character with the Strength of a Giant is not going to be able to hold around 42 lbs, on one arm without trouble? umm i think not. By far in real life i myself can hold 40 lbs weights at an angle as if i where holding a shield, for extended amounts of time. So as for checks to see if the Fighter can hold the weight and or suffer from it, i feel thier is no reason to penalize him. Besides i do have the Shield Expert feat, yes i know it allows me to strike with the shield and retain ac bonus, but i think that thier would be some degree of control thier.

*Ok, i have just said my thoughts, an yes i am the player of the Fighter in question, but if the Dm rules otherwise, i am all for it, it is his game!:D

Peace

I have a problem with the bad guys not knowing the gnome is there. If they are intellegent they will see him climb there unless he is already there we they are first encoutered. This is why I made the comment bout the gnome being there all the time. The gnome would have to make balance checks to stay on the shield while the fighter is fighting. If the shield is used to block then the gnomes AC is the gnomes AC + the shield bonus and the attack is against the gnome. The attack stands a chance to miss because of him not being able to see the opponent.

I have a real problem with people saying that the gnome should have a 50% miss chance. The +7 cover bonus to AC is far more appropiate according to the rules.

Neat

As much fun as this sounds there are more ways to skin a cat.

In an old campaign I played (halfling theif, 2e), we came up with another neat way to get backstabs (what sneak attacks were then).

We placed a specially designed harness on my char, basically leather straps like a backpack, though they had handles in the back. Then our Half-Ogre fighter picked my char up by the handles and threw it into combat. Miny Halfling Missle. This let my char backstab anything taller than him and we (the group) decided that he would essentially get a surprise attack cause no one expects a flying, flailing, halfling.

An alternate approach with 3e is to have the small char as a ranger and give it two weapons, like light maces. This is three attacks, 2x weapon and 1x halfling projectile. DM should decide if an attack of oppurtunity/bullrush occurs. Still, easy way to take out some of the bigger enemies in near one shot. Also great against wizards casting spells.

A giant has proportional weight to counterballance. a human with magically enhanced strength does not.

I don't believe anyone has said you can't hold the gnome and a shield in one arm. The question is are you going to be even slightly effective while doing so. I'd say either take a massive penalty, make the gnome weightless somehow or invest a feat, if you want to be able to do something this unusual and fight at normal efficiency...

> By far in real life i myself can hold 40 lbs weights at an angle as >if i where holding a shield, for extended amounts of time.

I'm not even going to go into live wieght, dead weight, distribution and torque. lets just say that I doubt you have expereinced anything like what you are describing your character trying to do.

not that it can't work to get the sneak attack - but until he jumps, all you are doing is shielding him into battle, not fighting effectively. IMHO of course.
