Things I'm Sick of - Action Movie Cliche #39

Will save roll = 1; -10 modifier...

Too many peeves to list all, but...

Revenge is hollow.

- "They raped, tortured, and killed my wife and twelve year old daughter (taking hours to do it), but now that I've killed them, I feel empty."

WTF!?!?!?!?

That is (one of many reasons) why The Crow is one of my very favorite movies.

Wisdom dies, stupidity lives.

- The savvy guy who has been around forever, surviving alone where no one else could make it with an army, dies because dumbflock won't listen. Then dumbass goes on to save the day.

Why did they send dumbass? Why not just have the guy who knows what to do handle it? (Sorry if this seems poorly stated, if I really get started, I'll write a novelette!)

I also remember much better movies coming out that year that didn't win the Oscar, thanks to Gladiator; I irrationally and spitefully hold that against the movie :D.

Just curious how you would know that they were better movies without having actually seen Gladiator. They could very well have been but I would think that you would, by your own admission, be the one person who would not know. :p ;)

Yeah. Could be that Gladiator won because it was *gasp* the best movie!

Anyway, what I hate the most are the stupid one liners and poor characterization. I also agree with the bit about the hero being "allowed" to kill the bad guy (Spares the bad guy, bad guy tries to kill the hero, and hero kills the bad guy in self defense). I also agree on the "Revenge is Hollow" thing (As well as The Crow. Great movie).

It's because people have parents, teachers, mentors in the real world that are represented by the "Wise Old Man" who can handle everything in the story. Usually there's a reason why the Wise Old Man doesn't do everything. "I'm too old for this kind of thing" is the typical excuse. I think it is a necessary element, but it can be executed poorly.

One action movie that I always though was wierd morrally but it no one else did was this lame steven segal movie(sort of a duh) where he is a environmentalist. He takes on the evil oil corp of course. But anyway in the end of the movie the evil oil corp calls in the FBI saying that some eco terrorists is planning on blowing up their plant, which was true actually. They just left out their evil plans and how they deserved it when calling in the FBI. So in comes Segal what does he do to basically innocent duped FBI agents, does he use his Aikido to take them out without really hurting them. Nope he decides to kill them all instead. Now isn't that a great moral lesson to teach to us all.

OH Tramatic flashback from that movie!

Segal asks the girl if she can ride a horse and she responds, "Of course! I'm Native American."

SHE IS AN ESKIMO! What was she riding at the north pole? Polar Bears?

I *did* say irrationally!
:D

(Actually, what I mean is that there were several fantastic movies that came out that year that didn't win; the previews for Gladiator looking dreadful to me. I can't remember, though, any of the movies that came out that year that wowed me.)
