Things you never did

My life is, thankfully, not terribly littered with opportunities that I passed upon, but now regret having not taken.

One, however, has now slapped me in the forehead.

The last flight of the Space Shuttle is scheduled for November (though it might get pushed back to December). Now, given that my chances of seeing one are virtually nil, I regret never seeing one of these great birds take off in person.

I live within driving distance of Cape Canaveral (assuming I can wrangle a buddy to take shifts with me), and NASA opens sales for viewing 3 to 6 weeks before a launch. Thank you for reminding me that for a couple hundred bucks I can totally manage this.

There was a gal I went to high school with, a couple of years younger, and we hung out a lot but never dated. There's been many times I've wondered "what if", especially if we had gotten together after college.

Other than that, not much. I've done most of what I've wanted in life thus far and if family history is any indicator I have a long way to go.

I just saw STS-131 from the causeway for entirely this reason. I got lucky in that my friend got congressional invitations after asking his rep for them. It was the most incredible non-family experience of my life. Do it.

I went to a launch when I was in Florida on vacation, but the weather wasn't right, so it got cancelled. :(

I regret not booking a supersonic flight on Concorde before they got grounded.

I don't really regret not having done anything in life, but do sometimes feel a bit wistful about one particular opportunity I passed up.

Keeping it safe for Eric's grandma, I'll just boil it down to an opportunity to be with my two semi-drunk and mostly-nude female college roommates one night (yeah, it was nearly a Three's Company living situation) who asked me to wait 5 minutes and then come join them in the bedroom. I totally chickened out.

As it's been 25 years since then and I'm very happily in a committed relationship, the odds of two really cute college girls ever making that invitation again are likely smaller than the planet being destroyed by a meteor during my lifetime, and the odds of my taking them up on it are even smaller. Alas. :)

I have one of those less-than-Grandma friendly ones as well. A friend from college who had put off my advances for a long time changed her mind and I was too clueless (or worn down by repeated rejection) to pick up on it.

I can't think of any real "never dids." As of right now I just have a list of "haven't yets," like visiting Australia, trying scuba diving and spelunking.

I've got a KoDT #20 GaryCon issue that is half signed by Steve Jackson. I never got around to getting to GenCon to have Gary Gygax sign the other half as it was intended.

A lot has been said about Regret. There are some many things to do in this world, that a man can't live it regretting all the stuff he didn't do. If you make time for Regret, you ain't got time to be doing.
