Those Neutrals Make Me So Mad!

except in rare occasions...

...deep down all PCs are really N/E (especially the paladins :p).

"Kill it, take its loot... move on". :p

In my games, I usually declare that people must be within one step of NG: LG, CG, LN, TN, NG.

I do not see how LN is within 1 step of NG, since it is just as far removed as CN.

Anyway, I think I could forsee a Lawful Neutral vs Chaotic Good conflict being played out due to the Chaotic Good playing as an "Ends justify the Means" kind of character. It practically defines about 1/4 of any season of 24 when Jack has CTU agents trying to arrest him.

I think a Lawful Neutral player who was determined to play an anal 'by the rules' kind of character could cause just as many problems as the chaotic neutral character. The only reason that this does not generally happen is that Lawful Neutral is not an alignment that typically fits most heroic tropes.

In over 30 years of gaming, I've learned that character alignments don't matter.

It's the players' alignments that cause problems.

That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Why is the CN guy necessarily self righteous? He may not care how others act.

The LG guy would probably have big problem the first time the CE guy stabbed someone for looking at him funny, even he does know he's a "bad dude".

It's not that he's necessarily self-righteous, but the problem cases involve people being those alignments and self-righteous.

I think a self-righteous CE would not get along too well with paladins either.

Well, a lot of players take CN alignment when they really want to play CE or NE but the DM doesn't allow evil characters; then play like an evil bastard with an occasional 'good' act so they can say they're not evil.

So of course they piss off LG players.

And the LG players piss them off when they try to stop the "CN" players evil actions.

Geoff.

The advantage of telling someone 'play a nonevil character' and having them jot down CN is that when they try to sneak in evil you can say 'Dude, no. I said no before, I mean no now, and if you want to play an evil bastard you can do it in someone else's game.'

And if they start whinging about how they have rays of brightness, just flat-out say 'you're pulling :):):):) with me, intentionally or not. Either play the character nicer, or leave.'

I have no patience for players trying to screw with the DM or other players this way.
