it didn't bother me at all, though as i kind of figured it out by then.

I suspected something along those lines pretty quickly, but was surprised to the real reason.
However, I can't see how anybody could hate this movie... I thought the premise was fantastic, and I can very much see it actually happening. Its certainly feasible.

I hated it because the premise was too obvious and has been done before...repeatedly. M. Knight is too focused on the "twist" ending. If he really wanted to win over most of the people who hated it, he would have added a second "twist", making it truly terrifying. Just my 2 cents.
As much as I hated the movie, I thought that the acting was fantastic, particularly that of Ron Howard's daughter.

Wow, I really like this! Yeah, I was really hoping that it would turn out more like your build, too.
Oddly enough, I just finished watching The Village for the first time about ten minutes ago -- weird coincidence.
I didn't hate the movie, but I did dislike it. I was especially annoyed by the revelation about the monsters. The big reveal/twist at the end wasn't as much of a disappointment as finding out that the creatures were fake. I agree that the acting was top-notch though, especially the heroine.

Although not exactly the same, Planet of the Apes, 28 Days Later, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail all come to mind.
The premise has been used on Sci-Fi shows in the past. I believe a Twilight Zone episode did it.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I wish I had. :\
