Thoughts about Optimisation

I was just reading the "lite" rules, and the Half elven bonus power got me thinking....

Half elven Paladin with the warlock power : Eyebite coupled with their Divine Challenge ability.
Mark them, then shoot them with Eyebite and turn invisible

For reference:
Eyebite Warlock (Fey) Attack 1
You glare at your enemy, and your eyes briefly
gleam with brilliant colors. Your foe reels under
your mental assault, and you vanish from his sight.
At-Will ✦ Arcane, Charm, Implement, Psychic
Standard Action Ranged 10
Target: One creature
Attack: Cha vs. Will
Hit: 1d6 + Cha psychic damage, and you are
invisible to the target until the start of your next turn.

Divine Challenge Paladin Feature
You boldly confront a nearby enemy, searing it with
divine light if it ignores your challenge.
At-Will ✦ Divine, Radiant
Minor Action Close burst 5
Target: One creature in burst
Effect: You mark the target. The target remains
marked until you use this power against another
target. If you mark other creatures using other
powers, the target is still marked. A creature can be
subject to only one mark at a time. A new mark
supersedes a mark that was already in place.
If the target makes an attack that doesn’t include
you as a target, it takes a -2 penalty to attack rolls
and takes 8 radiant damage. The target takes this
damage only once per turn.
Special: Even though this ability is called a
challenge, it doesn’t rely on the intelligence or
language ability of the target. It’s a magical
compulsion that affects the creature’s behavior,
regardless of the creature’s nature. You can’t place
a divine challenge on a creature that is already
affected by your divine challenge.

So what other things have people seen/thought about the possible combinations of effect/powers etc...

That's an interesting combination, but I'm not sure its broken. At its best, it boils down to denying a monster an attack action IF you hit with a Cha v Will attack that does much less damage than your regular attack.

I'm more interested in the rules for things like the Ranger's ability, I forget its name, that lets him take a 5' step before making a standard ranged attack. I have NO IDEA how the rules on this work, but if magical attacks can count as your standard attack (I think they can, I've heard comments to this effect), it provides an interesting way for a half-elf spellcaster to gain some mobility. Not broken, but possibly useful.

The implication from the sample half-elf warlock is that if the half-elf selects an at-will power from another class, he gets it as an encounter power.

So the half-elf paladin could mark the opponent and then be invisible for one round, which isn't that exciting.

Also WOTC stated they fixed the cheese with the Paladin's mark a while ago which may include the marked target having LOS within a specific range to you

That just seems like an extension of the ways that Paladin power is already broken, which we already knew. It seems very likely that the new Divine Challenge thingy will unmark the target if you turn invisible or run away.

I played the D&DXP adventures at my local gaming store, and the owner who was at D&DXP and talked to a number of designers mentioned that the paladin Divine Challenge power had already been adjusted in the PHB before D&DXP but it hadn't been in time to make the sample characters. Basically Divine Challenge left a big exploit - mark someone and then run away, and if they ignore your allies they are toast and if not they are taking -2 to hit and 8 radiant damage.

So something has already changed, not sure if it will prevent this combo.

Seems like a fun combo. And if not a half-elf, then a multiclassed character or one with the class training feat they mentioned in one of the blogs.

Cheers,
