Thoughts on these classes?

You are absolutely right. I hate 'em.
However, the PCs have a lot of defenses against them:
- remove fear (1st level Cleric spell)
- bless grants a bonus
- Paladin's aura
- Bard's song
(etc.)

Charm and Dominate effects aren't as bad as Fear or Knight's Challenge IMHO -- at least the player can choose how he turns on his party and kills his former friends. ;) That's fun. Running away? Way less fun. No choice about who I attack? Somewhat less fun.

And I'm not saying that the Knight's ability is 'broken' in any way shape or form. I just don't like what it does (when in the hands of an NPC... for a PC, it's fine).

Ah, okay. Your opinion is welcome, of course. I apologise for poking fun. :)

In fact, I kinda agree with you. Save or Be Useless (or next to useless) is almost as bad as Save or Die.

Yeah, and Hold Person must really suck.

Did you notice how it was changed between 3.0e and 3.5e? Save every round.

This nerfs it severely, but IMHO it's better to have a weak effect that doesn't kill a player's fun than to have a balanced effect which does. And it would seem that the powers at WotC agree.

And don't get me started on Slay Living. If the PC fails his Will save, he doesn't even get to choose whether he lives or not. Silly. :p

That effect is at a level when combats are resolved with a bunch of save-or-die. Coming back from the dead is a tactical consideration by that level.

You agree that a level 15 combat lasts far fewer rounds than a level 5 combat, right?

No worries. There's plenty of irrational hate flying around about Knights. My skin's nice & thick. :)

Glad we agree. :)

There must be some way to make these effects work in the game without killing the player's fun. That would be some kind of real-world magic. :)

Thanks, -- N

Nifft,

Killing the player's fun isn't good but just because they die doesn't mean they can't find another way to have fun.

Just saying...

The knight is awesome. Its abilities tend to be thematic and good for the party. I'm currently playing a 7th level knight in Alcar's game, and I saved another pc's life with my Shield Ally ability.

It's a great class; I highly recommend it, and I'm generally pretty anti-new-base-class. The only other one I'm an enthusiastic supporter of so far is the scout. :)
