D&D 4E [Thread from 2005] Ridiculing People Who Want to Talk About 4E - Okay on ENWorld?

I think the problem is that people are making Humor 4E posts, or others aren't taking it seriously.

Personaly, I'm tired of the threads. They cause endless debates that I find neither interesting, effective, or even usefull, and now with a 4E catagory and people posting humor there it's hard to filter out what is something important to pay attention to and what is just mindless nonsense that I can ignore.

Honestly, I've started avoiding the general discussion section due to the number of argumentitive 4E posts, and happened to stop in this morning and found 4 4E threads in the top five, one of which was claiming there was a market test for 4E. While I don't think it should be banned, I think it needs to be reigned in a bit, and yes, people who are being insulting about the subject need to be delt with appropriately.

I am firmly on the side of thinking that an official 4E category is a bad idea. It gives an air of legitimacy to an illegitimate subject.

Perhaps a category for Myths/Rumors that can include 4E, Satanism, Geeks, Jack Chick, Game designer deaths, corporate money grabbing, etc.

I know you don't run this board as a democracy, but how about making a poll in the General forum asking if there should be a 4E category? May I start one?

I disagree. I don't care about 4E threads. I don't read them. I don't care what anyone unofficial says about 4E. The 4E category makes it easier for me to skip threads where the subject may be somewhat misleading. "Oh, it's 4E. Skip that one..."

I think people are making a big deal out of nothing here.

If you want to start one, go ahead, but I prefer it stays in Meta, so we can keep threads where they belong topically.

I'll add that I'm still unclear why there is so much animosity whenever ANY subject (not just this one) shows up in more than one thread. If something ain't my cup of tea (and after I've checked it for rule-breaking) then I ignore it. There's a METRIC :):):):)LOAD of threads here whose topics I have NO interest in, yet they keep popping up, and I keep ignoring them and replying to the stuff that DOES interest me.

The Community DIRECTLY controls what the popular topics on the boards are. If you aren't interested in something, you are hurting your cause by joining in a chorus of people who dislike it - you are in fact pushing the topic further up the public mindset, instead of starting or replying to topics you DO like, and drowning out the stuff you don't by ignoring it!

Like Smokey the Bear says, "Only YOU can prevent forest fires." :)

When Episode III came out the Mods were pretty good about combining redundant threads.

Why is it a bad idea to do it for 4E threads?

I dont mind the discussion and pop in occasionally, but there's a new thread everyday it seems like.

I'm creating a 4E category for threads in GD. If you don't want to read 4E threads, please avoid those with this tag.
If I might make a request, could this new tag please be called "4E Rumors," or something similar? That would make it clear to new posters that anything in the threads is speculation rather than fact. I think calling it simply "4E" will just cause confusion, as people will assume there actually exists a 4E to have discussions about.

4E is already turning into some kind of urban legend, like Bigfoot, where people believe in it despite the lack of evidence for its existence. Having a tag for it, without clarifying the name, seems like it will just add fuel to the fire.

I like it as the more generic title, myself, because it covers rumors, humor, as well as the eventual threads about the real thing (which WILL happen, just not in the forseeable future.)

"4E Rumors" is definitely a more apt name for the tag. WotC employees have plainly and clearly said that no such product is in the works and until they say otherwise it is a slap in their face for any part of a News site to treat them like liars, something implied by a number of posters in those 4E threads and much more flagrant rules violation than the so-called "ridicule" that some people are complaining about, btw. "4E Rumors" or "4E Speculation" or something along those lines makes much more sense as a tag name, though I'd go further and suggest it be the name of a new forum.

The number of new threads seems to be plateauing (after we moved two "dissention" threads to meta properly, there are 6 total on the first page now), so unless more starts, we'll leave those to die down some. In the EpIII threads, we just told people "no more new Star Wars 3 threads" and that seemed to work, and we'll probably do the same thing here if it warrants it -- but keep in mind EP3 took over half of the front page threads in the Movies/TV/Books forum before we put the foot down!
