THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

Indeed assuming I switch over to 4e that is precisely what I'll due. Course it's mostly cause I don't like elves. But if it's a way to throw a non-elf race back in I'm all for it.

(Heh)
We know you're just joking, because everyone enjoys playing elves. Everyone.

The R&C book states that the Dragonlance gnome was iconic to D&D, but it has since been stolen by WoW. Additionally, they didn't want to bring the technological aspect as many don't like science in their fantasy.

That argument doesn't really wash well with me. As Psionics are more science than fantasy. Yes, I know that they won't be in the initial release, but there future existance in the game will be seen by 'hole' the future existance of Psionics leaves in the way of enchantment spells.

They feel that the majority of people don't like gnomes, so they booted them. I think that sums it up nicely.

Cool art. However, only the one I quoted really says "gnome" to me. The rest, if you had told me they were halflings, I'd never have known different.

Obviously, we are supposed to believe that Dave Noonan is actually Nibenay.

:D I would posrep you if I could.

I always liked the vision of gnomes having an attachment to the elements. This would allow you to have fire gnomes, air gnomes, earth, and water gnomes. In my thought they would serve as the protectors of the environment calling down the elemental forces to punish those who would destroy the world. I think that the preferred class could work as druids without too much of a stretch.

Right...because no one saw the LotR trilogy of movies except us geeks.

It would be an interesting study for sure, but I'd bet that if you asked a typical American to describe what an elf is, he or she probably wouldn't immediately think of Orlando Bloom. The Keebler elves and Santa's elves are much more pervasive, I would think.

Doug, there have been several threads and hundreds and hundreds of pro and anti gnome posts, some quite dramatic, since it became clear that gnomes would not be in PHB I. This thread alone is the counter-proof to your statement. It is already out to 4 pages, and mosts posts are on gnomes, not elves. And there is no shortage of gnome hate from a vocal minority.

As for the poll, I know of no player who has covered a majority of 3rd ed PHB classes...I mean, I even know a guy who hasn't played a human (except in Call of Cuthulu...or maybe he wasn't...) in about 10 years of playing. Does that mean humans are not popular? And I have certainly known people, all over the US, who played gnomes. Are you really saying that an option a majority have used, and said they like, and that only 20% don't want, is not worthwile?

But, that's not what the poll says. The poll says, (currently) that out of 260 people, 130 have NEVER played a gnome, and, additionally, of the total numbers, about 1 in 5 would never play a gnome in the future.

It's not saying that one individual has to play all races.

That's a giant Meh response. I wonder how many other races would have 50% of respondents saying that they have never played it. I would guess that no other race would come close. But, let us see shall we?
