Melee or Ranged. A weapon is classified as either Melee or Ranged. A Melee weapon is used to attack a target within 5 feet, whereas a Ranged weapon is used to attack at a greater distance.
I think we need to ignore this entry as a basis for any rulings... Because it would disquality Reach weapons from counting as melee weapons if they actually use their Reach.

So we can assume that weapon properties can ignore what the Melee or Ranged entry says. Which would mean that the Range desciption would turn thrown weapons into ranged weapons.

(only it says 'a range weapon has a range shown', not a rangeD weapon, so we still have plenty of room for table arguments)

Reach has nothing to do with range, I don't understand the issue. No weapon in the weapon chart has the word "ranged" (or "melee" for that matter) in it. You have loading or thrown followed by their range.

I don't care how people rule, I'm just pointing out what the text says. Feel free to read into it whatever you want as always.

Please read the weapon entry in the beginning. It says a melee weapon is used to attack at 5ft range. Everything else is a range weapon.

Where does it say that? As I quoted above, the 2024 PHB, it states:
  • A Range weapon has a range in parentheses after the Ammunition or Thrown property.
No limitation on being able to be used as a melee weapon. The only indication that something is a melee only weapon is that it lacks range. Logically we also know that anything with the loading property is also not a ranged weapon since you're hitting with the ammunition, not the weapon that launches the projectile.

If I missed something let me know, but the rules don't agree with you as far as I can tell. You can rule it that way of course.
See post above.

You are mixing up the property explanation with the weapon category.

Which is easy to do as the names are so similar.
@fluffybunbunkittens has it explained better.

Get off my lawn!
I think you have it backwards.
Maybe.... 🤷‍♂️

Actually readjng this section: it was better written in 2014.
Agree completely because there, in 2014, as I wrote before:

Range. A weapon that can be used to make a ranged attack has a range shown in parentheses after the ammunition or thrown property. The range lists two numbers. The first is the weapon's normal range in feet, and the second indicates the weapon's long range. When attacking a target beyond normal range, you have disadvantage on the attack roll. You can't attack a target beyond the weapon's long range.

Frankly, what they SHOULD have done, is simply say:

A weapon listed under the Melee weapons on the Weapons table is a Melee weapon.
A weapon listed under the Ranged weapons on the Weapons table is a Ranged weapon.

Done. :) No confusion I think.

I understand. A dagger is both a range weapon and a melee weapon. There's nothing that states they can't be both.

Yes. And the property should always read: a weapon with the range property can be used to make attacks at ranged, independant from the category.
