Thundarr the Barbarian

The Sun-sword is a power unto Itself, but with a device requirement. It can be taken away, but can't be used by anyone but Thundarr, if I remember.
Yeah, the Sun Sword could only be used by the one who charged it, which is more of a plot device then an actual limitation by itself. Otherwise, it's miftily handled by the 'Restricted' power feat. The cute point is how it bounces off living creatures.

Assuming PL 8 here
Device 8 "Sun Sword" (Easy to Lose 3 pp/Rank;Feats: Restricted 2) 24 Points
Strike 8 (Feats: Precise, Mighty; Extras: Penetrating; Limit: Half Ranks vs Living Creature) 14 Points
Deflect 8 (All Ranged, 3/Rank; Feats: Interpose) 25 points
Enhanced Intimidation 1 (Skill Increase) 1 point

I came across your site yesterday, Keith, and damn, man. That's some fine, fine work. My hat's off to you, sah. It's a great inspiration to me, since I'm starting in for a fantasy-themed but still Thundarr-esque setting for True20 Quarterly...

Why not d20 Modern + d20 Apocalypse? I'm probably going to run Thundarr the Barbarian d20 at GenCon using exactly that combo.

And you could crib Mok stats from the Wookies from d20 Star Wars while you're at it.

Thanks! Good luck with your project. Thundarr was definitely one of my inspirations.

I don't have Apocalypse. What in it do you think is really good?

Demon dogs!!!!!

Someday I WILL construct a D20 modern (with supplements) game that will attempt to capture some elements of Thundarr into it.

When I statted out Thundarr the Barbarian, I did it as part of my D&D/AE Masters of the Universe/Thundercats crossover. While the Masters were built on a level 20 power scale, the Thundercats were built at around 16th level and Thundarr was built at 10th. My reasoning for this, well ah-ha! I can't remember.

Thundarr was a Barbarian 7/Fighter 2/ Champion of Freedom 1. Ariel was a Sorcerer 9 (though I considered Rogue 5/Sorcerer 4), Ookla the Mok I made as a Barbarian 4/Ranger 4.

Lion-O was a Paladin 3/Unfettered 10/Litorian 3. Mumm-Ra was a Cleric 15/Somnancer 4/Lich. Tygra was a Mind Witch 7/Rogue 7. Cheetara was a Litorian 2/Monk 9/Cheetah Totem 2, with a 100' move. Panthro was a Litorian 3/Unfettered 6/Barbarian 5. Wilykit and Kat were Unfettered 4/Rogue 3. Pumyra was a Greenbond 10. Lynx-O was an Akashic 10. Snarf I never statted out.

He-Man was a Barbarian 10/Champion of Light 10, who transferred his championess to Castle Greyskull. Teela was a Ranger 3/Unfettered 10/Snake Totem 2. The Sorceress was a Druid 20 (just to be contrary). Orko was a Spryte 3/Magister 7. Mer-Man was a Ranger 6/Shark Totem 6/Sahaguin. Beastman was a Bugbear Bear Totem 8/Barbarian 5. Two-Bad was an ettin, Webstor was an Ettercap rogue (I think I might have been going towards Assassin with that one). Evil-Lyn was a Cleric 3/Magister 3/Mystic Theurge 8/Tiefling. Skeletor was a Heightened Greater Undead template Mage Blade 10/Blackguard 10.

(Reprinted and edited)
My next game:

Under a Broken Moon: Thundarr the Barbarian Roleplaying Game

"Ariel, Ookla! Ride!"

My favorite thing about this old series was the matte painting backgrounds. It was always the most random assortment of stuff. A luxury liner being used as a wizard's fortress in a swamp, for example. A lot of bad guys tended to set up shop on or near old National Monuments for whatever reason.

Apparently there used to exist a GURPS supplement for this setting, but its pretty obscure. If I were going to run it, I would have to do crossovers with other cartoons like He-Man and Thundercats. And maybe, just maybe, Transformers. Do it all under the d20 banner, most of the stuff already exists. (Moks are half-orcs with cosmetic differences, the Thundercats can all be made as AU litorians and terrig, Slive is just a lizardman and Jackalman is just a gnoll.)

So yeah, Masters of the Universe gets a comic relaunch, a new cartoon, a toyline that when tanks becomes a line of collector's busts, effectively making it the property that won't die... Thundarr gets a wiki page and a GURPS supplement that may or may not exist. Its just not fair.

Hey, I'll admit that viewed with the cool eye of reason, the cartoon sort of sucked. Cheap, sub-Hanna-Barbera animation, a plot that was some sort of derivative Star Wars/Conan knock-off and no engaging storyline beyond "Man in Fur Vest fights this week's poorly animated Monster/Wizard", but I can see past all that. I can see a game where barbarians and sorcerers fight multi-eyed wizards and giant furry bat-snakes on the decks of a partially buried cruise ship in the middle of a post-apocalyptic desert. I can see a world where men are free and Moks roam wild. I can see a world where conflicts of survival and savagery, sacrifice and struggle are played out-- under a broken moon.

By gods, man, can't you see it too?

I have seen the light. I can see it too! That's pretty cool. It's made me rethink what I want out of a fantasy game.
