True. If you go adventuring with a broom you can take a minor action to get your broom, another to get it to the mage hand, and a move to get it near the caltrops. You can then spend time slowly applying five-ish pounds of pressure to the caltrops (and optionally rolling your pg. 42 DCs to see how well you do). Something tells me that the fight will be long over or the warriors will be past the trap on their own before the Fantasia music stops playing.
That's assuming the broom is very useful to begin with. Try applying no more than 5 pounds of force to sweep up a pile of jacks. You'll fare poorly even if they aren't sharp or metal. Trust me, I've got a five and seven year old.

Mage Hand is a great spell, and useful in many situations that you wouldn't expect it to be. But it sucks for dealing with a ton of small pointy metal objects under a time constraint.
