Tiefling as a core race?

Meh. The point is, both are dumb to have in the core.
What was wrong with the old races?
Gnomes were redundant. Half-Orcs and Half-Elves were weak. Elves were worst at their favored class. Dwarves had more goodies than any LA +0 deserved.

Humans and Halflings were pretty okay, though.

Of course they have their uses. Unfortunately, they carry world assumptions outside the norm for many games, so their portability is less, IMO. They also would flat-out interfere with setting assumptions of my nascent homebrew.
That's exactly why I welcome them. :)

My game's setting is much more human-centric than most. Dwarves, Elves and the like aren't really options that I encourage. Some human tainted by the foul touch of the netherworld, though: that's cool, because it's still mostly human in outlook, age category, etc. Much less silly than an Elf.

I'd be just as happy if Satyrs or Centaurs had become core races.

Either of those would be better choices than Tiefling, unless they want to make planescape a big part of the core experience.

Another good question is whether they are going to drastically change some of their campaign settings to make Tieflings a more common occurence. Will there suddnely be larger populations of Tieflings in Greyhawk and the Forgotten Realms?

If they get that stupid ass planescape slang in my PHB im going to burn it.

They had seriously started cutting back on the slang by the time Planescape rolled over and died. In fact the books even refered to it as being no longer in fashion.

In hindsight, it shouldn't be at all surprising.

The iconic cleric in Dungeon magazine was a tiefling. With horns.

On the (awesome) cover of Dungeonscape there was a tiefling male. With horns.

When WotC posted stats for pregen PCs to put against the Colossal Red Dragon... you guessed it... a tiefling. Based on a miniature. With horns.
