Tiefling as a core race?

Who says elves, dwarves or any other non-human race is 'common'? It's not like half-orcs are all that common but they're a player core race, as well.

I think it's a great idea personally. The half-orc has limped around as a core race for a bit now, but only caught on with a small portion of the players... And I kinda dig a non-level-adjusted (as I assume it will be) Tiefling, perhaps Aasamir too?

I'll be interested to see the take on a race that's usually labelled evil and chaotic due to its birth, but then again, that never really affected half-orcs.

Heck, I'm still hoping for Kobolds to be a a core race (rather than say goblins). The 3rd edition Kobold seems overall kinda popular with the fans, so that might be nice to see.

As it stands, the only thing that I don't want to see is the 'fantasy standards' being the be-all and end-all race options... Some players (particularly in my group) like to go for exotic characters, and this means an immediate headache if savage species is pulled off the shelf. Tiefs. as a core race sounds good to me.

Course, I'm a fan of Aasimar moreso and would love if they were in...but no one loves the good guys. :(

Apparently one of the new black and white pics was labeled eladrin wizard. I'm hoping the theory that they'll be the aasimar renamed and another new PC race turns out to be true. All the other new pics seem to be of essential races and classes, plus the tieflings we've been told will be a core race. If they simply wanted someone to represent the planar side of things, a popular enemy like a baatezu or a tanar'ri would have seemed like a better choice. But an eladrin wizard? That strikes me as reimagining/renaming the race.

I've always had a neutral to negative opinion of the various planetouched races, and I'm curious to concerned about how they'll handle tieflings as a core race in Eberron 4E. Since it was built from the ground up for 3.5, the various races fit very well. I probably shouldn't be too worried, though; if the setting made me love half-elves, like halflings (for the first time in almost 20 years of playing D&D!) and tolerate drow, they can probably find a way to convince me to give the tiefling some love.

Tieflings & Aasimars are planar races though....at least they used to be. I didn't even like how they were standard in FR.

If they are core now, then the dozens of other planar races should be core also. They're taking away any traditional fantasy 'core' setting aspects of D&D and turning it new age sci-fi like fantasy to go along with all the video game themes :\

Not sure I like tieflings as a core race (especially if aasimars aren't), but I never really liked the half-races as core either, and non-Eberron gnomes always seemed to be confused as to whether they're trying to share the same niche as elves, dwarves, or halflings.

I don't think that's too bad. I'm just waiting for the outrage when they announce that Warforged are now in the core PHB...

Honestly, I'd rather see Warforged than Tieflings. It fills the roll of being something different without being generic and different.
