D&D 5E Tiefling preview!

Like the use of the Erin Evans quotation. Don't like 'a tiefling's bloodline doesn't affect his or her personality to any great degree', compared to Races of Faerûn's 'Carrying the taint of evil in their very souls'. Fiendish blood just gives you a cool tail, special powers and a platform for 'poor persecuted me' roleplaying?

My wife hated 4e in general but loved the 4e Tiefling in both look and flavor. As a fan of Planescape, I still have to say that 4e is my favorite Tiefling, and this means getting my wife (and some of my other players) into 5e much, much, easier. I may be in the minority but I have to say how much I love this decision.

I see very little complaint about the mechanical stats of tiefling, so I color that a plus (I could care less about tiefling, any edition, not my cup o tea), and I think they stats are fine. Cha is a bit odd (Tiefling Bards seems odd given the fluff they present...well on second thought, maybe Tiefling bards are Goth/Emo/Punk...lol!)
In the Planescape Campaign Setting where they were first introduced back in 2e, the Tiefling was one of the very few races that could become Bards in the first place. And this was back in a time they had silly things like racial class restrictions and level limits.

The thing I think we can assume from this.

1.) Tiefling is 2 pages; same as Half-orc, half-elf, and dragonborn.

2.) Each race starts on a left-page (rather than flow from one to another)

3.) Not all races will have subraces (tiefling doesn't, I think the other 2 page races won't either).

That gives us a good idea for how other races will work.

Gnome, Elf, Dwarf, and Halfling will have subraces.

I think some others (Genasi) will, but most (warforged, kender, goliath, etc) won't.

My guess is hellish rebuke lives on the warlock spell list in this edition.

Probably a safe bet...

Actually 4e Tieflings breed true with just about anything. RA Salvatore has a character whose mother is annelf and whose father is a Tiefling. This means it would he insanely easy to breed a hoard of Tieflings, just give them a harem of goblein women.

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

I find it interesting that Tieflings get an automatic orison (divine cantrip), giving even the weakest Tiefling the power to cast divine magic at will. In FR that means every Tiefling has to worship a God. Of course those Tieflings who don't believe would like draw such power from Asmodeaus.
