To The Other Game Company--Handouts back online?

If this legal issue is solved (Amigo backs off...), sure thing I'll post those handouts again - and at least one new handout ;)

Glad you like them.

Heh, downloaded one of the handouts, then decided to download the rest the day after... After all they'd still be there, right?

The Auld Grump, timing is the heart of comedy, or at least irony...

That's what I thought...
Tell you what: a little patience (one or two days, I'd say), and hopefully they're back - with a vengeance ;)

(Edit: ) Feel free to call us "TOGC". Really, we'd appreciate it. :)

Finally, the handouts are back ! And I've made two more for the heck of it, bringing the count of handouts to 8. :D

I sure hope they're here to stay. And, frankly, I don't know why not ;)

Woohoo! Good on you, Stefan! Does this mean you'll be entering the SRD 3.5 Competition as well?

Hmm... I know some people would love to take your pdf handouts and build on them to make their own entry to the competition. Change the fonts, layout, etc. What would be the legal issues involved in doing that? To pick an extreme example (not that anyone would be as silly to do this), if someone simply took your pdf files and pasted in their name instead of yours... would that be aviolation of your copyright? If the contents is free, can you copyright a layout?

On another topic, care to share with us what Andy's reaction was to your predicament?

@Conaill:
If someone changes fonts and layout... well, that's like doing your own version of the SRD, right? Simply pasting their names over mine would be a "violation of copyright" (I hate that term...) - sort of. Why should anyone do that? To enter the contest? That wouldn't be too bright, would it? Because people could easily see that the layout is "stolen" (I hate that term too...).

Let's talk straight: that layout is nothing fancy, it's just basic typesetter trade. I think they work out fine for what I intended them (handouts), nothing more.

On to other topics...
Andy's reaction? Pretty straight forward. He assured me that it's alright to use the SRD that way, that's all, and that he can't spot any errors (although: he's not a lawyer ;) ).

BTW, I'm totally unhappy with how the first handout (classes) worked out, and would love to change it, but frankly I've wrecked my layout file. Bah. If I'd really wanted to change that PDF, I'd have to start from scratch, and I don't see me doing that right now. Heck, I don't see me any more handouts (now that the basics are covered) in the very near future. But maybe I'll enter the contest nonetheless. Let me think about it...

Sure. I'm not suggesting that anyone should or would do that, just wondering where the line would lie, considering that the actual content itself is free.

I'm not very familiar with generating pfds myself, but I think some people would prefer to start with a nicely structured pdf version rather than with Wizards' clunky rtf files.

Considering that we're trying to develop the best possible free version of the srd, I think it's definitely in the interest of the community to encourage people to borrow and build on other people's work and good ideas.

I'm somewhat familiar with generating PDFs, and I'm pretty familiar with more than one layout program (heck, "typesetter" was my job for more than three years...). And from my point of view it's much easier to change something if you've got the original layout than if you are trying to change the PDF.

That said, I wouldn't really mind anyone using my tables, for example. Not the whole layout, but a specific part.

But believe me - it's much, much easier if you don't do it in the PDF. And much more precise (that's the typesetter talking ;) ).

Anyway, I'd say that any further discussions on this topic should go into the 3.5 SRD Competition .
