TIL that, at least in outport Newfoundland, lobster was once considered the food of the poor, so much so that when people ate it they would close their curtains lest the shame of their poverty be exposed.

Guess the Lobster Lobby and Garlic Butter Marketing Boards should be congratulated.
It was so cheap and considered such crap that it was fed to prisoners.

TIL I learned that all the police officers in RoboCop are named after serial killers.

This fact brought to you by the RoboDoc documentary, an in-depth miniseries all about the making of RoboCop on Prime.

Every now and then there's a bit of a resurgence, at least in select countries and cultures. In the US and Canada, in the late '60s. for example. You can see it in the movies of the time. On the streets, you would see the occasional ruffled tux shirt, ultra wide-flare bell bottoms, etc.. In the late '70s/early '80s you had the New Romantic music movement with people emulating the clothing of bands like Duran Duran, Visage, etc. as sort of a backlash against the more street oriented Punk movement.

Countercultures frequently exist in defiance of mainstream culture norms. Goths, punks, hippies, metalheads, all could look like the world's biggest peacocks by comparison to whatever was going on in the mainstream at the time.

Heck, when you look at the ways one decade's mainstream culture expresses disgust for the previous decade's style, it's frequently the outliers from that staid and drab baseline (the 80s disdained leisure suits as the 90s disdained the bright and bold New Wave colors).

TIL that Frank Miller did not write RoboCop. He wrote the sequels and some comics. I was going to make a joke about being surprised there were any women in roles other than lady of the night given it was written by Miller. Well, because it wasn’t.

Also, TIL that Miller was hired as a scab to replace two union writers who refused to write during the 1988 writer’s strike.

Miller is... not a good person.
