Today I learned that I can successfully change a laptop screen.

Like a pillock I picked my laptop with a thumb on the screen two weeks ago and cracked it right down the middle. It was basically unusable and it’s quite a nice laptop so I was pretty annoyed but my own fault. I have a plug in monitor so I could still run my online games but it was bloody annoying and could use it on my actual lap.

I took it straight to the best rated computer repair shop in my town (not saying much) where N old geyser who didn’t inspire a lot of confidence said it would cost me £140 plus parts, it would take two weeks because of holidays and he’d need to keep the laptop because he needs the screen model from the back to order it and ‘taking apart and re-gluing’ was ‘labor intensive’ work. Something seemed off.

Now I’m not a techy guy. It’s not my forte. A gaming friend even chose the damn thing for me. Though I went on YouTube watched a video, took the frame off the screen, lifted the screen off. Found the code. Ordered the replacement from LaptopSpares for £45. It arrived three working days later and I switched them over. It was completely black at first but I checked the internet again and it said to do a video driver reboot then a power reset. Lo and behold it worked and a beautiful new screen is perfectly fitted back in.

I’m not sure why I didn’t trust the guy in the shop. There were probably many things that could have gone wrong. Plus I never would have known to check the back of the screen for the model number had he not said. Although any goodwill I would have felt was wiped out by him trying to charge me £140 for fifteen minutes work. So I guess I also learned not to go back to that repair shop.

I'm a Dell certified service tech. To get the right replacement display all that I need to do is order it by the Dell service tag number on the laptop. That gives them the entire configuration of the unit. Start to finish it takes me about 20 minutes to replace and test the new display, though there can be issues that make it take longer. Some units require the replacement of the entire LCD assembly, as the parts aren't available separately and are essentially a sealed unit. Replacing those takes about 10 minutes, at most.

That sounds easier to order than having to take the screen out first.

Mine is a MSI. Luckily it had a frame clipped in place that was easy to unclip then replace. Also the ‘ungluing’ and ‘gluing’ was just a case of pulling the broken one off the small strips of sticky back plastic and then placing the new one back. It seems really solid.

Most of the laptops that I've dealt with have a snap fit or double-sided tape fit bezel around the LCD, that can be fairly easily removed using something like a guitar pick, if you're careful. Some of replacement LCDs for in warranty Dell units, that I've worked on, automatically come with a new bezel because they know that they're almost impossible to remove, without breaking , but I have a few spare bezels because I'm careful ;)

Do you mean 1993? I assume there are a ton of people who were in the building that day who were still working there eight years later. "Surviving" 1993 wasn't a terribly big deal in comparison to 2001.

There’s certainly a big number of survivors of the 1993 attack, but there was also turnover in the businesses located there and the people they employed. Some of those businesses had multiple locations.

But you also have to account for the odds that the towers would face two terrorist attacks. Even staying within NYC, there’s all kinds of symbolic or economic targets of high value.
