TIL cowboys are not a US original. The whole thing comes from the vaqueros of Spain and Mexico. The word buckaroo is a corruption of vaquero. Ranch is from the Spanish rancho. Rodeo is a Spanish word. So all those white people in cowboy hats and boots are LARPing as Mexican vaqueros.
Definitely, but at least some of us know it ;)

This thread is about stuff we learned today. This thread is not a stealth "pineapple" thread -- it is legitimately for fun/cool/interesting/weird facts you learned suddenly and want to share.

For example, this morning on my way to work I was listing to The Great Courses "Ancient Writing and the History of the Alphabet" and I learned that Egyptian hieroglyphs (not hieroglyphics, btw) were an invention, rather than developing over time. There are no proto-heiroglyphs and it appears as though Egyptians in contact with ancient Mesopotamia saw writing and were like, "Let's make us some of that!" That's pretty cool, and I did not know it until today.

Please don't use this thread to talk about politics, AI, D&D editions, pineapple on pizza or other dead horses we like to beat. Share fun knowledge instead!
Today I learned there is a mushroom in china that if you don't cook it long enough will cause you to hallucinate little people. Every single time you eat it. Apparantly there are historical documents indicating similar things in other parts of the world as well though no one has been able to find those. So those stories of faerie circles that took you to the fey side may have a real world cause. Also some people never stop having the hallucinations after eating the uncooked mushrooms.

I saw an article about that a few months ago. Really mind blowing stuff!
