Today I learned +

Something to keep in mind about supplements. Your body can only absorb so much. If you're deficient, more will be absorbed, but much of it is still going to waste. Always read the labels. Some work better with food, others without. As always, check with your doctor If they say you need it, then take it. Get their recommendations on brands.
And mega doses of some can cause harm, though others like Vitamin C just get passed.

I once worked with a guy who was taking $200 worth of vitamins a month - he'd been talked into it by a GNC nutritionist. He said he felt pretty much the same taking all those vitamins, except they made "his balls kind of hurt." I told him I could save him a lot of money by kicking him in the balls daily for only half the monthly fee.

Oddly, he didn't take me up on my kind offer. But we started referring to his vitamin supplements as "scrotumins" from that point on.

That's true too. Too much of a good thing is still harmful, even water.
What Is Water Intoxication?

Good advice on water. Drink when you feel thirsty. Stop when you're no longer thirsty. Everything has water in it. Your diet soda should count towards your daily intake.

That doesn't actually work reliably when you get older. Its a known thing that over time as you age, your sense of thirst degrades; if you wait for it to check in you can be seriously dehydrated.

Mind you, I'm talking older than even most people on here trend. I first started having the problem crop up in my late 50's and had to have my doctor explain it was a thing.

This absolutely true. I need to almost force myself to drink a lot of water starting days before an event. And even then I have to keep drinking throughout the event, cause that feeling of being thirsty isn’t enough. It’s a fine line though, cause too much and a rest room visit isn’t desired. When I was on a bicycle, or in armor.

Lifting was ok cause rest room visits aren’t a big deal.

Believe me, I'm aware of the downsides of too much fluid, being somewhat subject to a common condition among older males. But until I started scheduling fluid for myself a couple times a day, I was having some non-trivial problems, and when you only have one kidney, you absolutely don't want to be doing that.

And, in certain conditions, by the time you're feeling thirsty you're already dehydrated.

Yup. In my case I started noticing I just felt--bad. But it wasn't associated with thirst internally; I just realized what the problem was after I drank and felt better. It could have been hunger, or coming down with something, or a number of other things.

In my case it was worse. I was crewing for a racer, doing odd jobs (and her website), and her sponsors didn't show up to help. I got so busy that I forgot to drink anything on a 32C day. I don't remember the 250Km drive home and spent the next day in bed with must have been heat exhaustion, drinking Litres of water.
