Todd Lockwood Laid Off By WOTC! (thread necromancy)

Very few games studios have actual staff artists. TSR/WotC seems to almost always be the only one. I know White Wolf uses a lot of freelance art, and it seems that WotC is just headed in that direction.

GASP!

How could they? This is madness! I can't imagine why they would pull such a crazy thing. Lockwood does excellent work...I don't know what they were thinking.

Just the ramblings of a man who doesn't really know anything...

I find it odd that WoTC got rid of the entire R&D dept right after the Campaign world
submission thingy ended. Now they have a new world they can print AND they got 11,000+ other ideas they can use if they want to.

But I know nothing, just my wandering thoughts.

And it always sucks when someone gets Laid Off. Good luck Todd.

Will the last person to leave WoTC, please turn out the lights...

Sigh, this just gets more and more depressing. Can there be a good side to all this seeming stupidity? :(

Well here's wishing the best to all the artists and previously laid off employees.

Nothing like getting rid of most of your top talent to insure that you keep putting out top-notch products, eh?

Geez... I wish Hasbro would just sell it to Peter A. and be done with it.

I don't mean any disrespect to you, Shark. I'm sure you're using the harder word to convey your displeasure with WotC. But keep in mind: that harder word does splash damage -- to the firer as well as the "alleged firee." :)

AJL

I'm in agreement with Aaron here, Shark -- you need to edit the title of your post please.

I would hate to be laid off and then see someone showing publically the misconception that I was fired... even if its in an effort to give me support.

I still find all this lament strange.

People complain that staff artists are artistically hampered by corporations restrictions on their work.

Now people are upset that a corporation does not keep artsists on staff. NOWHERE in the industry are artists kept on staff. Generally, in any artistic endeavor, artists are not kept on staff. Authors, actors, singers, visual artists are 99% of the time independent contractors.

Don't be upset at WotC for conforming to industry (and business) standards. That is just the way the world turns.

I'm curious to see if this is an indication of fewer product releases down the road. As I hear it, the core rulebooks have always been the real money maker. The return on investment of adventures, campaign settings and accessories hasn't been worth the effort.
