Tome of horrors for 3.5?

The stauts of any sort of re-publication for the Tome of Horrors is up in the air. Unfortunately, the decisions are completely out of my hands. I wish I could say more.

Tome of Horrors Conversion

I know to some it doesn't seem like there are a lot of changes in monsters from 3.0 to 3.5, but from my end, there are a lot of differences.

"Beasts" aren't there any more. Some skills and feats are off on some of the monsters. Some of the spell-like abilities now refer to spells that don't function the same way or no longer exist. Damage reduction is different.

Maybe I'm not as quick as others are, but it takes me a bit of time trying to get an accurate conversion to 3.5.

I'd happily buy a revised Tome of Horrors.

Um, given the license in the book itself couldnt any seriously sick individual who wanted to retype the whole thing from scratch go ahead and make the changes? Granted I wouldnt want to see the section 15 for the bad boy (PAGES long) but it could be done. I know I updated a number of them for a new sourcebook that we're working on right now. Typing even just those dozen in though REALLY sucked. Maybe the sheer volume of it all is whats stopping someone.

If they did another hardcover, I hope they would learn from the mistakes of Creature Collection Revised and use better art more. Not the same crappy art enlarged to bulk up the book, but new art for about 75% of the material.
Necro didn't do CC. CC is a White Wolf (in the guise of S&SS) product.

they would have to pay more to commission new artists, and it would take longer to put the book (back) together. (hmm, maybe that's what's taking so long...) heh. ;)

Yeah, but Clark and Bill are the original authors of CC and they are the owners of Necro.
Ah.

Still, I'd imagine that the layout and artwork of CCrev was really something that had nothing to do with Necro.

No, they didn't have anything to do with the re-write of CC. As for ToH, like Erica said above, or at least hinted at, she and Scott have done most, if not all the conversions to 3.5. What is holding up a rerelease is if Bill and Clark think it would be economically smart for them to do so. They cannot afford to do as re-release that doesn't make money. Any short fall will come straight out of their personal bank accounts.

You guys want a ToH1 3.5? E-mail Necro, give them the confidence to take the marketing risk by giving them a good idea how many sales they would have. If they get 5 or 600 e-mails promising to buy a 3.5 they will do it, as long as WOTC wouldn't shut it down.

Does it really need a 3.5 update? I mean, its not like there is a huge difference between the 3.0 and 3.5 monsters.

Well, for a start, the number of feats and skill points. Some feats and skills have been changed, as well. The Beast type disappeared, and Shapechanger became a subtype.

To put it in full compliance with 3eR, though, they need to do more thorough changes as well:
  • Turn some creatures into swarms.
  • Give monster tactics for a few beasties.
  • Propose advanced (classed) versions of a few beasties.
  • Give a LA for nigh everything.
  • Add or substract (choose randomly) 50% to the CR of every fiend, and redo the critter to fit.
  • While you're at it, remove from the fiends all non-combat spell-like abilities they had.

:p
