Tome of Treasure and what is "core"- I am a little worried

So, what is going to be required to play the game? And what is going to be out every year?

PHB $30
DMG $30
MM $30
ToT $30

Optional yearly stuff:

A Campaign Setting $30-50?
The Campaign Setting's Adventures $20-30?

Online stuff:

DDI $10-15/month
Online Figure $X? for how many?

I also heard their was some sort of "complete arcane" type pf book too coming out.

My worry here is that I wont have enough money to get all the stuff that is coming out! It is a major money sink!

Eh. It's the same amount they've always asked for in a new edition. Nothing new.

Really, what it breaks down to is about 30-40$ a month. That's still a lot cheaper than golf, tennis, and many other hobbies I can think about.

In the Sep entry of his Ampersand column, Bill states that there is *at least* one hardcover D&D product planned per month for the next few years.

Me? I think that's great! (Until the system gets bloated to the point that it drives me away, like 3E did. But I don't think that will necessarily happen with 4E because they seem to be taking a much more homogenous approach to its design... I don't think later books for 4E will feel as 'tacked on' as they did with 3E.)
Seeing that a date night with my wife starts at $50 (two movie tickets and 4 hrs of babysitter) and is usually closer to $100 (if we include a decent dinner,) I have no prob dropping $30 a month on a new book.

The idea that everything that is not setting-specific is now considered "core" annoys me a bit.

Core, to me, means PHB, DMG, and MM. Everything else is (supposed to be) supplemental.

Declaring everything "core" seems more like a ploy to grind out product and reap more revenue than to support the game with quality product.

I understand WotC is a business and publishing books, adventures, etc. is their gig. I just hope that the quality of the game comes first in their business model. Build it right, build it good, and I will buy it.

I imagine that splat books and generic texts will be core... but experimental texts will not.

But just a book fleshing out core classes has every reason to be core so long as it doesn't end up like the 2E Elf book.

Ok, here is my updated list of stuff. Let me first say I am going to want everything, but reality will set in. :(

I am glad I got those new book shelves from Ikea. :heh: :uhoh:

If you call yourself a D&D player yearly stuff:
PHB $35
DMG $35
MM $35

Semi-Optional yearly stuff:
ToT $35
"Complete" Books $25

Optional yearly stuff:
PoL setting adventures $25
A Campaign Setting $35-50?
The Campaign Setting's Adventures $25?

Online stuff:
DDI $10-15/month
Online Figure $X? for how many?
Do you have to pay to get the online versions of your books?

I still think that it's unlikely that the Tot will be an annual release.

Do you have to pay to get the online versions of your books?
Yes. Use the code from your book and pay a one time fee equal to a "cup of coffee" (likely around $1-$2. Does not require a DDI subscription, but activating the book does add more info from the book to the DDI tools if you are a subscriber.

Buy, when I have a date with your wife, it costs half that! ;)

Oh, snap!

Obviously you're not paying for the same level of service I am! Bummer for you, I have an exclusive contract. Might want to find your own.
