Treasure/Equipment value for NPC

I don't have my books here at work, and can't seem to find the answer in the SRD, so I'm asking here.

I need the treasure & equipment value for a 6th level NPC that my players will be encountering in tonights game (he is a major NPC opponant, and one they will probably cross paths with quite often). I have a feeling I am giving him quite a bit more treasure than he should have. That's fine, as I don't expect the PCs to fight or defeat him tonight, but I don't want to give him far more than he should have. Can anyone help me out here?

If you want to ramp him up a bit on the equipment front, maybe you could put him halfway between the NPC and PC values (13,000) for a 6th lvl character, at about 10,000.

Or maybe he's just one of those odd NPCs who never saw a DMG
