Actually I do see this as a real problem. If the film does well there will be sequals made. This may go good for awhile, but by film 3-4 the original cast will move on (I'm sure no-one wants to write another "I'm Not Spock" Book) and the scripts will become more studio edited until we start running into Batman and Robin/Spiderman 3/X-Men 3 problems. Then it will become a joke and no-one will touch it. Thus a great TV series/universe will be killed off on the basis of short term profits over long term viability.

Therefore Trek must die, so we can love it again?:-S

You mean like the problems we ran into with The Final Frontier, Insurrection and Nemesis? :erm:

Honestly, the franchise had already become a joke years ago (see also: Galaxy Quest). I'm surprised anyone was willing to touch it, let alone someone like Abrams.

Personally, I don't see it. I love Star Trek, and I loved this movie. For one thing, the writers took great pains to stay true to established continuity. For another, they took the time to write an explanation for any weirdness with the continuity.

The new movie is different from previous Trek films and the various series. It's more action oriented. The characters have to be re-introduced to newcomers, and to a certain extent, long time fans as well because of the re-boot. Obviously, re-booting everything in an alternate timeline will upset someone, but so far I haven't seen it.

I think it's pretty obvious why Abrams directed the new movie. While Abrams has been successful in TV, he's only directed one other movie (Mission Impossible III) If Abrams wants to be movie director, directing a major studio picture is the way to go.
