Tripped up over cleave

Huh. Then your DM was using some feat other than cleave.

....or he/she was using cleave, and didn't understand how it works. (shrug)
This was in the P.C. video game: The Temple of Elemental Evil, not a campaign.

those video games try to mimic the game rules. The transition is not 100%.

Never take for granted what happens in those games, happens in pencil and paper D&D. A lot of rules foul ups happen that way.

No, because they did not attack the same character they tripped.

This does happen in ToEE... but it's the combination of Improved Trip and Cleave. You Trip someone, and take your free melee attack; this attack renders them unconscious, triggering the Cleave onto another opponent.

ToEE doesn't have a Trip->Cleave cycle without a melee attack in between.

The alternative you may be seeing is iterative attacks - a Trip with one, and a melee attack on another opponent with the next - and mistaking it for a Cleave off the Trip.

As a slight tangent, and out of curiosity for a PC I'm considering making, with the Awesome Blow feat, if the target went down, as in prone, as a result, would that qualify for a Cleave attempt? Or if you knocked them up and the falling damage killed them or disabled them, would that qualify for a Cleave?

I'd also include dazing or stunning an opponent to the qualifications for a cleave attempt

No. Being prone is not being "dropped".

Yes. The falling damage from the Awesome Blow is counted as part of the damage "you deal".

If your opponent travels through the threatened area of a friend, and that friend kills the opponent as a result of the AoO (and before the opponent takes the falling damage from Awesome Blow), then you would not get to cleave.

Sweetness - Spiked Chain + Combat Reflexes + Awesome Blow + (Great)Cleave - somebody with that could essentially be a walking wall, and would be able to get free attacks on the opponents who managed to close with him somehow.
He'd be able to smack somebody up in the air and hit them again on their way down, and then they'd get falling damage, then they'd wind up dropped, by any definition, after some time of that and then he'd get free hits on the opponent's allies .. hmm, he'd have to smack different people though, otherwise he'd wind up with four or five guys stabbing him in the back .. must work on this .. make a good 'meat shield' cohort for archvillian casters .. must develop this and post a build ..
