People forget that you needed STR9 CON7 to be a fighter in 1e. Literally higher than the magic user's INT 9 Dex 6.

Even Gary thought Fighter were supposed to be exceptional individuals.

If you rolled bad, you were supposed to reroll your PC.

A minimum req of Str 9 Con 7 doesn't really make a good case for 'exceptional individual'...

Well he wrote that you were suggestto have 2 15s.

So a random baker wasn't supposed to be a fighter if they turned adventurer. They were supposed to die if they tried.

This is a mindset thing, though. There has never been an edition of D&D where I've felt like a tag-along with my fighters or rogues.

They can. It’s called the Eldritch Knight. Levitate at 8th level. Fly at 14th level.

Do you also cave in and not use beholders, things that counterspell, or things resistant to magic? Do you check the spells memorized and only put in challenges the wizard has spells memorized to handle?

Extra ASI/feats that you have to take to be as good at range as a cantrip... wow how cool.

All it takes is a longbow to be better than a cantrip. You don't even need the feats.

A longbow and 14 dex does worse damage than a fire bolt with 20 int.
