Tumbling

It lies to you to prove that an action that normally provokes an AoO doesn't do so when made a free action. If it doesn't state that there is no AoO, then the AoO remains.

I think you are mistaken here. While I cant actually find the rule, I believe that free actions do not provode AoOs. For example, a Quickened Spell does not provoke. In fact, I cannot find a free action that does provoke.

I'm not mistaken here :)

Whether you think that it needs to explicitly state that as a free action provokes, or whether you think it doesn't, is in this case irrelevant.

The rule Lord Morte referred to - stand as a free action with a DC 35 Tumble check, found in Complete Adventurer - does explicitly state that it provokes an AoO.

Therefore, my note of '... that provokes an AoO' was not mistaken :D

But note that they SPECIFY that it provokes an AoO, despite the fact that normal loading of a crossbow already provokes.

This implies that making it a free action would otherwise make the action not provoke.

QUICKEN SPELL [METAMAGIC]
Benefit: Casting a quickened spell is a free action. Casting a quickened spell doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity.

Note that they SPECIFY that it does not provoke an AoO, when normal spells do provoke.

This implies that making it a free action would otherwise provoke as normal.

but you can only load an hand or light x-bow but not a heavy x-bow as a free action using the rapid reload feat.
RAPID RELOAD [GENERAL]
Choose a type of crossbow (hand, light, or heavy).
Prerequisite: Weapon Proficiency (crossbow type chosen).
Benefit: The time required for you to reload your chosen type of crossbow is reduced to a free action (for a hand or light crossbow) or a move action (for a heavy crossbow). Reloading a crossbow still provokes an attack of opportunity. and yes as a free action it still provokes an AoO.

Yeah, but ...

Step 4: Maintain Grapple. To maintain the grapple for later rounds, you must move into the target’s space. (This movement is free and doesn’t count as part of your movement in the round.)
Moving, as normal, provokes attacks of opportunity from threatening opponents, but not from your target.

Duck season! :D
