Day 259: Raven Elk and the Other Door

Raven Elk checks the last door that hasn't been opened, but not before touching his spear point, using Way, and saying: "Light".

He then tests the handle to see if it will open as readily as the others and thrusts the lit spear point in to see what there is to see within this chamber.

GM: Moving back into the dining room, Raven Elk goes to the door on the west wall while Taylar, Adisakti, and Vittero move to the kitchen. He looks at Maka as he goes by who seems to have fallen into a trance. The door opens readily and as Raven Elk points his illuminated spear head forward, he can see that it leads into a fairly long hall that ends in a T. Having seen nor heard any sign of danger since dispatching the angry spirit, Raven Elk ventures forward. The T abruptly ends in two very small rooms with open doors. The identical rooms have several vent holes in them, a stone seat with a hole bored into it, and an open wooden barrel. He finds all of this extremely odd until it dawn on him what he is seeing. The previous occupants had evidently manufactured an indoor latrine. Raven Elk thinks to himself, 'whoever heard of such.'

Maka will approach the third tapestry (the one to the South, assuming each tapestry occupies a cardinal direction) and take a peek behind it, without crossing the threshhold. If possible, he will look to see if there is a nearby globe that can be lit with Way, so as to illuminate the room before entering.

Day 259: The Southern Most Tapestry

Maka will approach the third tapestry (the one to the South, assuming each tapestry occupies a cardinal direction) and take a peek behind it, without crossing the threshhold. If possible, he will look to see if there is a nearby globe that can be lit with Way, so as to illuminate the room before entering.

GM: ... There are two plain tapestries separated by about a pace on the east wall and two more on the north wall in the same formation.

OOC: The southern most tapestry will be the one on the right on the east wall.

GM: Moving the tapestry so that the light from the kitchen spills in to somewhat illuminate the room, Maka readily sees that this is a servants room. It is about a pace wide and two paces deep. There is a glass globe to the right, just inside the entrance. There is a small bookshelf on the far wall, though any reading material is long passed use. There is a single chair in the back left and a small bed, lengthwise on the right. The bed is occupied by the remains of a person, the dry air and the altitude practically mummifying it. The powdering remains of the clothing look remarkably like those worn by the angry spirit earlier encountered.

Taylar looks over the mummy to try and determine cause of death. "No wonder the spirit we encountered was so angry if these are his remains. He can't move on and needs our help. After we search those other three rooms behind the tapestries we should collect his corpse and bury it in the garden so his body may return to the earth from which we were formed. This will help him move on to the spirit world." He turns and looks to his friends, "Or do you think he would prefer to be cremated? I know nothing of their rituals but I would rather not end in fire."

Day 259: The Butler's Room

Taylar looks over the mummy to try and determine cause of death. "... we should collect his corpse and bury it in the garden so his body may return to the earth from which we were formed. This will help him move on to the spirit world." He turns and looks to his friends, "Or do you think he would prefer to be cremated? I know nothing of their rituals but I would rather not end in fire."

Being careful not to disturb the body until they are ready to move it, Taylar searches the bedroom.

Despite his father being the Priest of the Dawn within the crew's home community called The Outpost, Vittero seems a bit uneasy about the corpse. The angry spirit coming at him did not even seem to cause a flinch, but he does not want to even look at, much less enter the room with this mummified body.
"Corpses give me the creeps. Since I was a small child, my father would explain the things to me about preparing the dead so that the spirit could be released from its anchor. He said that the Light of Dawn was made by a giant fire burning in the aster and that life, oh blah blah blah. Apparently, if we bury that thing he will just haunt the grounds until his body decomposes. It sounds mean, but we should probably build a fire in that open pit in the kitchen and burn him on it. The dead body cannot feel it. I know the ritual. I just never wanted to do it."

GM: Taylar searches but finds that there is nothing of interest in any of the servants' rooms. All rooms are identical with the exception of the one corpse. Cursory examination of the body reveals that its original possessor seems to have died of old age, or maybe poison. There are no injuries to the body.

It sounds mean, but we should probably build a fire in that open pit in the kitchen and burn him on it.​

Taylar recoils in shock and stares horrified at Vittero. "Burn him in the kitchen? As long as we decide we will never use that oven again. Light, the smell will be terrible."

After Raven Elk tells the group of his discovery of the latrine Taylar perks up a bit. "I'm going to go use that indoor latrine."

Maka nods at Vittero. It looks as if he has had an epiphany.

Maka says, "Burning the body will set the spirit free. Then maybe an eagle will come for him, and take him to the sky. Let's do this, now, quickly."

Adi hides a smile as he thinks of a few humorous remarks he could make... ”his spirit had left, but his stench remains” in particular causes him mirth, but given the circumstances he decides to hold his tongue.

Day 259: Disposing of the Remains

Taylar recoils in shock and stares horrified at Vittero. "Burn him in the kitchen? As long as we decide we will never use that oven again. Light, the smell will be terrible."...

Vittero crinkles his nose and cracks his knuckles. "Not the oven, that fire pit. I do not want to be trying to break this body into pieces to fit it in an oven. It is bad enough to have to touch it at all."

Maka says, "Burning the body will set the spirit free. Then maybe an eagle will come for him, and take him to the sky. Let's do this, now, quickly."

Vittero continues, "I think that we do not even need to go out and get wood. As dry as this corpse is, we should be able to lay it on that pit like it were a pyre and cause it to combust. Maka, help me get the body, then several of us who are willing, we should set it on fire at the same time. It will be quicker."

GM: Maka and Vittero move the corpse intact to the cooking pit. Disintegrating pieces of clothing fall away as they move it. Once the corpse is placed on the fire, Vittero actually incants a blessing over it as his father would have. He nods and everyone who is willing manipulates thermal Way simultaneously to ignite it. The igniters back away as the corpse becomes engulfed in flame. The smoke rises and wafts into the chimney port. Just as the fire is dying out, the remaining smoke seems to form into the semblance of a person. The image seems to bow in an old manner of respect, then the smoke is out the chimney and gone.
