At the moment he hears the sound, Vittero stands from tending the cookfire. He retrieves his bow and moves in a flank toward the sound.

Maka pauses, and stands up.
Tellerian Hawke said:
"I think we have company," he says, pointing in the direction of the noise.
Raven Elk quickly takes up a defensive position toward the direction of the noise, his spear at the ready.

Taylar keeps his club at the ready, listening and feeling the vibrations of the ground to determine the approach of the creature.

GM: The sound is peculiar. Something is approaching, but it is not a step of a familiar beast. The animal must be small or extremely light on its feet. There is no vibration to feel. The movement is too light.

Vittero offers quietly,
"Perhaps it is some flightless game birds scratching this way."

GM: Within a few seconds of Vittero offering his assumption, several round brown shapes can be seen shuffling toward the discarded offal. It appears some carrion beetles about the size of a man's head have followed the scent and are looking for food. They appear fully intent on there target and oblivious to their surroundings.

OOC: Sequencing needs to be determined if action is taken. Roll %, looking for a high number. Give results on LINE.

GM: The time is just past midday. The weather is hot and calm as would be expected of day 39 into Doldrums. The beetles are moving directly towards the discarded innards, which were deposited about 30 paces away, slightly uphill and upwind to the very slight, occasional breeze.

GM:
OOC: Impetus:
Affect: Self
Effectiveness:

  • Essence + Cohesion +
  • Collegiate
This passive technique is used to augment the speed of a character's ability to initiate action under the Commercial Task of Sequencing.

Sequencing: (order of action)

  • Impetus (Collegiate Task) +
  • Body + Motility +
  • Mind + Knowledge +
  • Commercial
This passive technique is used to determine the initial reaction time with regard to combat. A single combat sequence comprises all actions possible in ONE SECOND of time which is divided into 100 equal parts called tics. Not all characters will be able to act in the first second, especially when using slow weapons.

Raven Elk: 9 + 19 + 87(d100) = 115
Taylar: 9 + 18 + 41(d100) = 68
Maka: 11 + 17 + 42(d100) = 70
Vittero: 10 + 19 + 95(d100) = 124
Beetles: 0 + 6 + 67(d100) = 73

Vittero says,
"I know these are not the beetles we are looking for, but they will be good practice and we can sell their carapaces to the hunting lodge."

Seeing that the beetles are oblivious to their surroundings, Vittero runs to within 3 paces before firing his bow.
OOC: Attack: 10(projection) + 19(trajectory) + 18(launch) + 54(d100) = 101
Defend: 2(defensivenes)
Damage: 101 - 2 = 99% * 10 = 10 - 8(deflect) = 2 - 2(soak) = 0: ineffective

GM: Vittero's arrow flies true, but it bounces backward from the carapace shattering the shaft.

Realizing that it is under attack, the beetles shuffles quickly toward its assailant.
OOC: Attack: 0 + 6(lethality) + 8(combat) + 67(d100) = 81
Defend: 10(konokoro) + 11(defensiveness) + 17(combat) + 95(d100) = 133

Vittero easily avoids the quickly shuffling beetle.

GM: Raven Elk reacts next.

GM: Meanwhile back in the Outpost, Adisakti finished his morning duty of cleaning one of the brewer vats only to discover that his friends had departed on an expedition without him. Knowing that Vittero and Taylar were both prone to impetuous action, he did not become angry but instead sought to learn whence they had gone.

Raven Elk launches his spear at one of the beetles while offering up a prayer to the gods of the hunt, nature and the ancients.
GM: Running quickly to close the range for an effective throw, Raven Elk lets his spear fly.

This passive technique is used to augment Combat tasks involving projectile weapons. The specific use of this technique is listed under each Combat Task to which it can be applied.
Trajectory:
  • Body + Motility +
  • Mind + Knowledge +
  • Commercial
This active technique considers the training of hand-eye coordination and is used to augment the Combat Projectile Skill.
Launch:
  • Projection (Collegiate Task) + Trajectory (Commercial Task) +
  • Body + Motility +
  • Mind + Knowledge +
  • Combat
This active task requires the use of a projectile, though any object launched from the hand, whether by natural or mechanical means is sufficient for the purpose of determining the outcome of this task. The advantage to the attacker of a projectile launch is that it cannot be defended. It must be avoided by using one of the Defensive Commercial tasks.

Attack: 9(projection) + 20(trajectory) + 19(launch) + 87(d100) = 135
Defend: 2(defensiveness)
Damage: 135 - 2 = 133% * 20 = 27 - 8(deflect) - 2(soak) = 17
Body: 4 - 17 = -13: incapacitated
Mind: 2 - 13 = -11: dead

GM: Raven Elk's spear flies true, bearing more force than had Vittero's arrow. Pushing the elitra that covers the softer body aside, the spear stabs through the beetle, killing it. All other beetles are yet focused on the refuse and have yet to engage their surroundings

Maka intends to shoot an arrow at the next nearest beetle. He is hoping that he’ll have better luck than Vittero.
GM: Maka quickly moves to a more reasonable shooting distance and fires his arrow.

OOC: Maka: 11(projection) + 19(trajectory + 20(launch) + 91(d100) = 141
Defend: 2(defense) + 67(d100) = 69
Damage: 141 - 69 = 72% * 10 = 7 - 8(deflect) = -1: ineffective

GM: Maka's arrow flies true but it careens harmlessly off the chitinous carapace. The beetle, who's attention has now been acquired, turns and quickly shuffles toward Maka.

OOC: Beetle: 6(lethality) + 8(attack) + 67(d100) = 81
Maka: 9(konokoro) + 9(defensiveness) + 20(defend) + 42(d100) = 80

GM: While the beetle does catch hold of Maka's leg, its attack is ineffective.

If anyone looked closely at the mhytre they would see a gleam in his eye as he charges in with a whooping battle cry and brings his club down on the closest threatening beetle.

If anyone looked closely at the mhytre they would see a gleam in his eye as he charges in with a whooping battle cry and brings his club down on the closest threatening beetle.
GM: The beetles have ceased to be oblivious to their surroundings. The one in Taylar's sights turns and spits at the charging Mhytre. The spittle almost aspirates as it is projected forward, emitting a peculiarly acrid odor.

OOC: Beetle: 10(toxin) + 67(d100) = 77
Taylar: 9(tranquility) + 12(skepticism) + 41(d100) = 62
Muddle: 77 - 62 = 15% * 10 = 2
Mind: 8 - 2 = 6: mildly dazed

GM: Taylar crinkles his nose as the spray but seems mostly uneffected.

OOC: Taylar: 11(fury) + 18(lethality) + 21(attack) + 41(d100) = 91
Beetle: 2(defense) + 6(defend) + 67(d100) = 75
Damage: 91 - 75 = 16% * 20 = 3 - 2(soak) = 1
Mind: 2 - 1 = 1: slightly dazed

GM: Taylar smacks the beetle aside, yet it rights itself to return for another attack. There are 3 additional beetles that have yet to engage. One turns toward Maka, one to Taylar, and one to Raven Elk. All 3 beetles spits the same spray as the previous one did.

OOC: Beetles: 10(toxin) + 67(d100) = 77
Maka: 11(tranquility) + 10(skepticism) + 42(d100) = 63
Taylar: 9(tranquility) + 12(skepticism) + 41(d100) = 62
Raven Elk: 9(tranquility) + 12(skepticism) + 87(d100) = 108: resisted
Muddle: 77 - 63 = 14% * 10 = 1
Muddle: 77 - 62 = 15% * 10 = 2
Mind, Maka: 8 - 1 = 7: mildly dazed
Mind, Taylar: 6 - 2 = 4: dazed

OOC: This completes the first combat sequence:
  • There are 6 remaining beetles.
  • There is 1 dead beetle
  • Taylar: Mind = 4: dazed
  • Maka: Mind = 7: mildly dazed
Sequencing needs to be re-determined. Everyone roll % and post results in LINE.

OOC: This completes the first combat sequence:
  • There are 6 remaining beetles.
  • There is 1 dead beetle
  • Taylar: Mind = 4: dazed
  • Maka: Mind = 7: mildly dazed
Sequencing needs to be re-determined. Everyone roll % and post results in LINE.

GM: Meanwhile back at the Outpost:
Adisakti learns that his friends have departed on, at least, a day's trip to see about eliminating some large beetles that had gotten into one of the herb fields commonly used by Raven Elk's ma. Collecting his staff for travel and communicating his desires to join his friends, his father not only gives him permission but some dried meat, bread, and a waterskin as well.

His friends have about a 3 hour head start heading southeast. He figures that he will be able to catch them once they make camp.

OOC: Combat Sequencing:
Raven Elk: 74
Maka: 91 - 10(mildly dazed) = 81
Vittero: 71
Taylar: 90 - 40 (dazed) = 50
Beetles: 87

GM: The beetles, realizing that they are being threatened, use their normal tactics of emitting toxic spray in hopes of either escaping or causing their attackers to flee. All 6 remaining beetles aspirate spittle into the air.
OOC: Beetles: 2(muddle) + 10(toxin) + 87(d100) = 99
Raven Elk: 9(tranquility) + 12(skepticism) + 74(d100) = 95: ineffective
Maka: 11(tranquility) + 10(skepticism) + 91(d100) - 10(daze) = 102: resisted
Vittero: 10(tranquility) + 13(skepticism) + 71(d100) = 94: ineffective
Taylar: 9(tranquility) + 12(skepticism) + 90(d100) = 111: resisted

Maka will draw his knife, discarding the bow, and attempt to rush the bug, and bowl it over. If he can manage to expose its underside, he will stab it with the knife. Hopefully, the chitin is only one-sided, like a turtle.
