Two 20s, no 1s - how often do you use altered dice?

Sorry.
I just couldn't hide my shock that so many people here bragged about throwing another gamer out the door. Seems downright mean. Where's the forgiveness? Where's the love?

And just because you don't see 'cheating' doesn't mean it's not happening. A LOT. I was seeking those players' opinions; I didn't expect so much condemnation. Darned if they would admit anything now.

All right - just tossing the humor aside a second - I can understand the reaction to cheating at die rolls. It's no fun if the other players are abiding by one set of rules, and one player is abiding by his own. It's cheating if not all parties agree to the situation. It's not cheating if it's cleared with all the players beforehand.

Because RP Gaming is a medium in which storytelling is important, some DM's will sometimes claim leeway in altering some outcomes in order to keep a player's fun from being spoiled; some DM's claim this is part of the job of refereeing the game - a favored save here or there, an attack that missed when it really hit, and so on. Conversely, it could be a fudged dieroll against the players for drama - If he finds the players are upset at either of these, then he should stop.

Some DM's allow "fate points" or "action dice" as a means to cheat, to bend the story in the players' favor. If they do, that's well and fine - they set the rules of the campaign! But the player who takes it on himself to follow his own rules is doing the other players a disservice, and they are understandably going to be upset.

I haven't read any bragging about tossing people, but many groups have a trust issue. If I can't trust my players I don't want them playing., Just like if they can't trust me, I shouldn't be playing.

And just because a few people say we don't like cheating will not stop the cheaters from posting. They aren't poisting because there just are not that many of them in reality.

It depends where a person's opinion falls upon the continuum.

Some (perhaps yourself) view this as no big deal and don't understand why someone would get slam dunked for cheating. That is one end of the continuum.

Others view the issue of cheating in a RPG as a character flaw, and for some, a big character flaw. The logic goes - if you cheat at RPGs, what else would a person cheat at? Cheating is just another form of dishonesty. And "like follows like". That is the other end of the continuum.

I am not at the far end of the continuum but I view cheating as something I don't tolerate at my table. I run a fair game. I expect the players to conduct themselves 'fairly' in return.

Did somebody say something about how there was no room for a serious conversation in this thread? Wasn't me, no sir!

okay, so maybe I cheated

I've never seen people 'ejected' mid-game but I have seen and asked people to leave after a number of warnings. Both warnings and ejection was done after game sometimes a day later.

I'd remove a cheater on the spot if I caught them cheating, maybe after a warning if it's from a player I wouldn't have expected it from. Maybe. But I hate playing with cheaters, and I don't have any problem getting rid of them, in these games or any other. There are a number of known cheaters that play with us from time to time, and they aren't even allowed to play in games I run.

As DM, I only cheat if I designed an encounter badly, and it's too hard. Though in that case, I don't really modify the die roll, I just change the encounter somewhat, to make it a bit more useable.

So if people say they cheated it's the truth, but if they say they didn't they're lying? That's informative. So if everyone's cheating and you know it, what's the point of starting a thread asking about it?

Oh, bah hah hah. I sense a pack of mini-trolls in this thread. Macho little buggers, too, by all the posturing.

Like anyone ever really ejects a player from the game?! GIMME A BREAK!

It sounds "fair" and tough, sure. But I have never ever seen anyone asked to leave the game table for a faked dice roll. Not even a dozen weighted rolls.

That sort of fibbing is as bad as claiming you never cheat.

Sure, of course your experience is absolute physical truth. Go away, boy, you bother me.
