Two stats per defense!

That doesn't add up. It makes sense, but the math is wrong.

Specifically, the fighter and wizards defenses don't match that. These are the only two that come up short. The rest are spot on, or have mystery bonuses.

If your "scoop" is the case, then there are are also no defense bonuses given by class. For example: the paladin and fighter would logically get a Fort bonus, but there's no mystery bonus to use.

Paladin:

Fort: 13 (+3 from stats)
Refl: 14 (+0 from stats, +4 from ?)
Will: 16 (+6 from stats)

Cleric:

Fort: 13 (+3 from stats)
Refl: 12 (+1 from stats, +1 from ?)
Will: 17 (+5 from stats, +2 from ?)

Fighter:

Fort: 16 (+7 from stats, -1 from ?)
Refl: 13 (+1 from stats, +2 from ?)
Will: 12 (+1 from stats, +1 from ?)

Ranger:

Fort: 13 (+2 from stats, +1 from ?)
Refl: 15 (+5 from stats)
Will: 13 (+2 from stats, +1 from ?)

Wizard:

Fort: 10 (+0 from stats)
Refl: 15 (+7 from stats, -2 from ?)
Will: 13 (+0 from stats, +3 from ?)

Warlock:

Fort: 13 (+3 form stats)
Refl: 13 (+2 from stats, +1 from ?)
Will: 15 (+3 from stats, +2 from ?)

Thats the problem with 4E. Game balance is everything. Don't ask for any logic besides balance.

At least there seems to be some balance in this edition, which I can't really say for any previous edition.

I have no problem with logic and verisimilitude---and if I can apply them without slowing down or unbalancing the game then I will.

I'll admit that tying Intelligence to Reflexes is a weaker link than Strength to Fortitude or Charisma to Willpower, but it's not completely illogical and I'm willing to make that leap of belief to gain the other benefits of this system.

OK:

e.g. small gives you +1 to all defences (check out the Kobold)
Halfling Paladin:
F: 10 +2(STR) +1(small size)= 13
R: 10 +1(DEX) +1(small size) +2(Heavy Shield)= 14
W: 10 +3(WIS or CHA) +1(small size) +2(Paladin class)= 16

Your problem ones:
Dwarf Fighter:
F: 10 +4(CON) +2(Fighter class)= 16
R: 10 +1(DEX) +2(Heavy Shield)= 13
W: 10 +2(WIS)= 12
Tiefling Wizard:
F: 10 that is it!
R: 10 +5(INT)= 15
W: 10 +1(CHA) +2(Wizard class)= 13

are you adding both ability score bonuses? You only use the higher.

In the rogue article, didn't he get +2 to his reflex save just for being a rogue? Seems we'd expect that from other classes as well....perhaps our current explanation isn't as neat as it seems.

Yes, I was. The blog doesn't say "either Str or Con feed into Fort." It says, "Str and Con feed into Fort."

There is a huge difference between "either" and "and."
