Two-Weapon Defense

Slightly OT, but Ijust let players take the feat "+1 AC." They can provide whatever flavour text they want; TWD, tough hide, defensive stance, preturnatural awareness, etc.

Improved Buckle Defense (or Greater or whatever) is also quite nice for a two weapon fighter. For the cost of one feat, you potentially add 6 to AC with -1 to hit.

The spiked chain fighter in our campaign did this, and doesn't regret it.

Eventually you'll even be able to add greater fortification on that buckler. That's just groovy.

By the time you get to Improved/Greater Two Weapon Defense, you actually get a greater benefit out of Fighting Defensively than you do with Combat Expertise (especially if you have Tumble). Consider: with Combat Expertise, you take -4 to hit and get +4 to AC. With 5 ranks in Tumble and ITWD, you get an extra 5 points of AC for that same -4 to hit. ITWD and GTWD give the same degree of benefit as normal TWD, so if you think that the base Two-Weapon Defense feat is worth taking, then the improved versions are as well.

Note that Improved Buckler Defense doesn't provide a bonus to characters that wield 2-handed weapons, only if a character is wielding a weapon in their off-hand. So works for TWFs but not 2-H by the RAW. 2-H are good enough as it is to give them a houserule to use this feat too IMHO.

Wow. You're right.

My friend will be mad.

It's still a lot, IMO for a single point of AC.

AR

It is not a single point of AC.

two weapon defense - +1 shield bonus

greater two weapon defense - +3 shield bonus to AC.

This is in contrast to the weapon focus chain which adds +1 at each level.

GTWD requires ITWD requires TWD. Thus, +1 per level.

GTWD also seems a very bad deal if your DM lets in animated shields as a character getting to these levels should be able to afford one and large animated shield +1 is 3 AC for no feats.

Missed that because the table of feats in CW doesn't list it as a prerequisite, but the feat description does.

That means it functions exactly like the weapon focus chain - which translates to what's the problem, IMO?

Animated shields still count as if the character were using them, including ASF and any penalties for using a shield (for instance, the loss of all monk abilities). The TWD tree doesn't suffer these limitations.
Also, animated shields cost gold. TWD is free.
