Because the Battlemaster can do more useful and tactical things than just damage.

Yeah I would think this is fairly obvious. The "simple fighter" should be able to do equivalent DPR without a lot of thought, but shouldn't have a tool kit of other tricks up its sleeve.

5e is pretty much ALL ABOUT not requiring system mastery.

Agreed, Brute was the perfect fighter. Everything it should be without unnecessary crap thrown in. Too bad the bespectacled nerds had to go all Texas Instruments on the class.
 


Why play a complex class like a battlemaster when the brute can dish out similar damage without bothering with things like thinking and tactics?
Because you want to bother with thinking and tactics. For the type of player the battlemaster is intended for, thinking and tactics are their own reward. If you regard the complexity of a class as a price you have to pay, something you have to suffer through, in order to earn an effective outcome, then you should just be able to play a less complex class and still be effective, because this is a recreational game that is designed to create an enjoyable experience for you.
