Understanding the "Dungeons and Dragons" brand

Dungeons & Dragons is "stagnant," I think, because at this point its just too late for it to bring in anything modern.

People who want something more modern have those options. I can go play Dungeon World, a really amazing game, and get the experience I want from the more modern practices of RPG design and development. If I want something less modern, I've got D&D to play. D&D has set itself as what it is, and it would have to shed all the current players to change, because there is just a huge gulf now between what it is and what a modern RPG is like. If it had slowly evolved starting in the '90s, then maybe we'd have a totally different game. But, its just too late now.

That's not a bad thing. Most modern RPGs that I play don't use miniatures for one, and I love minis. So, I don't mind if D&D forgoes some things. And I still have things like Dogs in the Vineyard, Dread, Apocalypse World, and Everyone is John.

But, now that I think about it, a game of Everyone is John set in my D&D world would be truly amazing. I must now make this happen.
