And overall, Ive always found the aversion to video games to just be bizarre. One of the earliest lessons i I had re: game design, and the lesson I think made running TTRPGs really click for me, was that regardless of the system, the mechanics, or the intent of play, what matters is that whatever is happening, the "gameplay" as it were, is fun and endlessly repeatable even if entirely removed from all the trappings.
I'm running the Fallout TTRPG which is based on the video game franchise of the same name. Despite being a TTRPG, I'm pretty much running it as if it were a Fallout computer game. Having a lot of fun with it.

Counterargument: The Voyage to Arcturus
It don't matter when it's Arcturian, baby!

This gets into the "how much can you change something before it stops being that thing anymore". Would it still be D&D if you removed classes? Levels? Vancian magic? These are all things I've seen people say the game would be better if they didn't exist. Heck for some people, removing alignment starts to make it something they don't recognize anymore. I imagine if I look through the forum, I'd find a post somewhere that digs into "what makes it D&D for you" and there would be a lot of different ideas. It probably ended up closed by a mod. lol
I honestly get both sides of this kind of argument.

Any RPG with roughly the same premise is D&D to me. DCC RPG, Index Card RPG (the fantasy version), Dolmenwood, Shadowdark, XCrawl, Black Sword Hack, Pirate Borg, Warcraft, World of Warcraft, Daggerheart...they're all D&D to me.

And yet...I'm still salty about things like the stats being in the wrong order (it's supposed to be Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution, Charisma) and AC going the wrong direction (it's supposed to go down, not up).

I am super excited about running my first Shadowdark game soon. I like that is promises not a replica of "ye olden days" but that it promises a games that embraces those ideas but in a very modern way. I have been explicit on these boards about how I just don't "get" the popularity of OSE (for example). I mean, I own the B/X books. What's the big deal? But I DO understand why Shadowdark is exciting.

If D&D wants to emulate fantasy that is held dear by GenZ, they have to completely overhaul the game system in order to achieve that. Which is fine as far as I am concerned, but that did not go so well last time and I don't get the impression that WotC is willing to make any big changes.
I don't think they'd have to go berserk to incorporate more modern fantasy elements in the game.

I suspect the Minecraft monsters were a test and they're watching those downloads pretty closely. And Minecraft is absolutely a fantasy game, possibly the most popular one of all time.

I think you're going to like it. I ran two different games this past month, and it felt both like putting on comfortable old clothes and also taking a fast new car out for a spin. Its particular combination of mechanics and subject matter is a ton of fun to DM and to play.
