Urg the Unlikely, Half-Ogre Wizard NPC throughout a lifetime. (complete 12/15/02)

There is no aging rate given for ogres and I used the human rate for Urg. I am assuming that ogres and other giants have a slightly longer life span than humans, say maybe that of a half-elf. So, Blog would be middle age and still quite potent. Besides, as cheiftain he would most likely be bit more powerful than the average ogre, higher strength, maybe a few warrior levels, and therefore able to maintain his dominance even into middle age.

Hope that helps.

Catastrophe has caught Urg at last. Blog Braineater, clan chieftain of the Crack Skull ogres and Urg’s former adopted father has tracked his wayward son to Longsaddle. The ogres under the cover of night streamed into Longsaddle with torches blazing and murder in their hearts. The town militia led by Harkam Bayle, cleric of Tyr, fought bravely but was overwhelmed by the rampaging ogres. Many were slain as the ogres tore the town apart searching for Urg, but it was he who found them.

Soaring over the buildings, his body surrounded in a nimbus of purple flame, Urg fell upon the ogres with unparalleled fury. From aloft he rained fire and lightning down upon the marauding humanoids until their bodies lay scorched and broken in the street. At last all that was left was Blog himself, miraculously untouched throughout the spell storm. The ogre chieftain called up to his former son, cursing him for cowardice and demanding that he do battle without the aid of magic. Urg, surveying the destruction the ogres had wrought and seeing the broken bodies of his friends lying dead on the ground felt a terrible rage building in him. Urg descended to the ground, took his staff in hand and then with an ear-shattering howl charged Blog, staff raised high. The huge ogre chieftain grinned evilly and gripped his club with both hands awaiting Urg's reckless charge. The two combatants came together with a terrific crash, club and staff flailing with bone shattering force. Urg and Blog traded blows for over a minute, until finally Urg caught the massive ogre with a downward sweep of his staff that crushed the bones in Blog’s leading leg. Crippled, the ogre fell to his knees his club raised over his head in a vain attempt to ward of the avalanche of destruction Urg rained down upon him. The battle ended suddenly with the dull crack of a shattered skull and the muffled thump of Blog collapsing in the dirt. Urg stood over his adopted father, oblivious of his own wounds, which were grievous, and watched with grim satisfaction as the blood pooled around the ogres motionless form. Finally as the rage left him, Urg collapsed, the strain of his wounds and the emotional trauma he had suffered simply too much to bear. The townsfolk that had come out from hiding to watch the titanic battle rushed to the stricken half-ogres aid.

Under the watchful eye of Harkam Bayle, who had survived the ogre attack, Urg recovered slowly, slipping in and out of consciousness for days at a time. Although Urg had defeated Blog, he had paid a terrible price. The ogres club had crushed one of Urg’s hips and he would walk with a cane for the rest of his life. In addition a glancing blow to his skull had caused permanent nerve damage and cost him the sight in his left eye. Urg was thankful despite his injuries; he had finally escaped his past and put to rest the restless spirits of his former life.

The town’s coffers were strained to the limit with the vast reconstruction efforts needed to rebuild the town. Urg knew that the lair of the Crack Skull ogres contained much booty looted from their victims and once his wounds were healed enough to travel he and Kaylek set out to claim the treasure for Longsaddle. The journey was long and dangerous but Urg found the Crack Skull lair easily and after a short battle he slew or drove off the few remaining ogres and then loaded with treasure returned to Longsaddle

The following months after Urg’s returned from the Crack Skull lair he and the people of Longsaddle rebuillt their broken town. Urg donated vast sums of his personal fortune to the families of those who had been slain in the ogre attack, but the guilt he felt for their suffering would only fade with time. Urg found some comfort in his god and spent many hours in silent prayer to Tyr, seeking guidance and strength from the lord of justice. His wounds on the mend, Urg has resumed his magical studies and seeks new ways to improve Longsaddle’s defenses with magic. With the support of Harkam and the church of Tyr, Urg has also commissioned the construction of a wall complete with ramparts around the town. Urg has vowed never to let the people of Longsaddle suffer needlessly again, and he and his magic will stand before any that wish the town harm.

Urg and his dwarven apprentice Kaylek have prospered over the last seven years as “Urg’s Unlikely Artifacts” continues to attract wizards from all over the sword coast. In addition to the potions and scrolls the shop normally stocks, Urg has been known on occasion to take commissions on specialty items. He has recently begun to enchant weapons and armor and his first suit of enchanted plate mail went to his long time friend Harkam Bayle. Although Urg enjoys creating magical items he puts a strict limit on the amount he does in a given year, as the strain of creation can be debilitating after too long.

Urg has been a guiding force in the effort to shore up Longsaddle’s defenses since the disastrous ogre attack seven years ago. A stout 10-ft high wooden wall now surrounds the entire town with large gates north and south. The amount of trained militiamen has increased and guards are posted twenty-four hours a day along the walls and at both gates. Healing potions and scrolls are now stock piled in case of an emergency and Urg has seen that each of the key members of the town, such as Harkam Bayle, have a number of other useful potions at their disposal should the need arise. All of these changes have made the townsfolk feel much more secure and there is little fear of another surprise attack.

Urg continues to expand his magical knowledge and to tutor his eager apprentice. He leaves much of the day to day activity of running the shop to Kaylek, who appreciates the autonomy Urg affords him. Urg has gained a few more magical items from the booty collected from the Crack Skull lair including a ring of protection and two wands. From the body of Blog Braineater Urg claimed a pair of magical gauntlets that he wears as a reminder of his past. The gauntlets augment Urg’s already formidable strength.

The strain and heartache Urg has suffered over the past 10 years has aged him. His hair has gone completely silver and he has taken to wearing it loose instead of braided. The wounds from his battle with Blog pain him considerably and he has trouble walking without the aid of his staff. The pain is worst on cold and rainy days as his hip aches bad enough to keep him immobile for the entire day. Urg wears a leather eye patch studded with moonstones over his blind eye, which only adds to his already fearsome appearance. Despite his pains, Urg is still jovial and kind, quick with a smile or cheerful greeting to anyone he comes across in his daily errands and the town of Longsaddle is very grateful to have their “unlikely wizard” watching over them.

“Urg’s Unlikely Artifacts” attracts adventuring wizards from all over the sword coast, and many have forged lasting friendships with its half-ogre proprietor. Urg dearly loves it when a roving wizard enters his shop and will spend hours discussing topics arcane with his customers if given the chance, but one such customer Urg looks forward to seeing more than any other. Kitkazza Longshadow is a silver-haired half-drow sorceress and part time adventurer that makes her home to the south in Red Larch. She makes the journey up to Longsaddle every few months to purchase magical and alchemical supplies from “Urg’s Unlikely Artifacts”. Urg is quite smitten with Kitkazza, intrigued by her exotic beauty and her sorcerous magic. Kitkazza will usually stay the night at The Great Green Gargoyle when visiting Longsaddle and Urg always finds an excuse to take his meals in the common room at the same time she does. Kitkazza always invites the half-ogre to join her and the two will while away the night talking and drinking. In the morning Kitkazza makes the long trip back to Red Larch leaving Urg with a heavy heart and a longing he knows will never be fulfilled.

Urg never expected for Kitkazza to return his affection but needless to say he was quite pleased when she rolled into Longsaddle with a horse drawn cart laden with all of her possessions. Kitkazza had made a modest fortune through her adventuring career and decided Longsaddle suited her well and that she would be happy settling there. She purchased a small cottage very close to Urg’s tower and was immediately accepted by the town, who felt quite grateful that two powerful spellcasters called Longsaddle their home.

Once Kitkazza settled in, she surprised everyone, including Urg by spending a majority of her time at Urg’s tower researching spells and magic items. Through these long hours of research Urg and Kitkazza grew close and what Urg thought impossible happened with an ease that shocked him. Kitkazza expressed her feelings for Urg one night after a lengthy experiment had gone awry leaving both spellcaster covered in soot and the remains of their failed experiment. She had watched her feelings grow from friendship to love over the months they had spent together, becoming enamored with Urg’s keen mind and gentle spirit. Urg could not believe that a beautiful creature like Kitkazza could find anything appealing about a grizzled old Half-ogre like himself, but he embraced their newfound love with all his being.

Urg courted Kitkazza for six months and then in the spring of his 51st year he announced to all of Longsaddle that he and Kitkazza were to be married. The town was overjoyed that their longtime friend and protector had found true happiness at last. The wedding was a huge affair that the entire town attended, the reception was held at the Great Green Gargoyle and the ale and wine flowed well into the next morning. Kitkazza moved all of her possessions into Urg’s tower the next day and the couple began their life as husband and wife in earnest.

Urg has entered old age but the years he carries seem hardly evident. The joy his marriage to Kitkazza has brought him has healed the pain in his heart and even his physical hurts seem less of a bother with Kitkazza by his side. The two spellcasters travel frequently to Silverymoon and Waterdeep to sell their wares or simply for the pleasure of the journey. Kitkazza’s ability to create wands has opened up a new market for “Urg’s Unlikely Artifacts” and the shop continues to prosper. Urg has never been happier and he looks forward to a long and peaceful life with his wife and his magic.

Urg has laid another of his dear friends to rest; Harkam Bayle cleric of Tyr has left this plane to dwell at last with his god. Harkam was buried on temple grounds and Urg himself conducted the ritual of passing to speed Harkam on his way to eternal life. The sadness of losing his close friend is made easier by the new joy in Urg’s life; his first child Jaken was born a healthy 11-pound baby boy. The infant shows little of his ogre heritage and resembles his mother in most ways, a fact Urg is thankful for. Jaken, now four years old, did inherit one of his father’s traits, he has developed a shock of blue-black hair just like Urg’s. The small family still dwells in Urg’s tower and there the two spellcasters continue their magical research and see to their child’s education.

In the four years Urg and Kitkazza have been married Urg has learned very little of his wife’s history. She is loath to speak of her past and Urg has only been able to assemble a very rough picture of her life before she came to Longsaddle. Kitkazza has admitted that her mother was drow and that her father knew her mother only briefly. Kitkazza’s mother played no role in her life and her father raised her. Kitkazza refuses speak of the place she and her father spent the majority of her childhood no matter how much her husband pleads. When Kitkazza reached her adolescence her natural magic began to manifest and when she was old enough she set out to learn as much of her innate spell ability as she could. She joined various adventuring groups, never for very long, and her experience and power grew. She quickly tired of the adventuring life and settled in the last place her most recent adventuring group disbanded. That place was the town of Red Larch and there Kitkazza lived until she heard the rumor of a half-ogre spellcaster in the town of Longsaddle and began paying visits to the unlikely wizard. Urg of course knows the rest of her story, but he feels a distance from his wife that he cannot breach.

Kaylek, Urg’s dwarven apprentice has learned all that he can from Urg and with his mentor’s blessing has set out to see what kind of wizard he can become. Without the aid of Kaylek, Urg spends more time minding his shop than he would like and is considering hiring some help until Jaken is old enough to take up the slack. Urg still finds the time to create magical items and has even constructed a magical circlet to boost his already impressive intellect. “Urg’s Unlikely Artifacts” continues to thrive largely due to the patronage of a handful of wizards from Waterdeep and Silverymoon. These wizards request specialty items two to three times a year and pay handsomely for their creation. With his coffers brimming Urg has far more wealth than he and his family will ever need and generally donates the excess to the temple of Tyr for the benefit of the town.

Urg makes every attempt to spend his days doting over his son and enjoying his life. Now in his mid fifties, he is still healthy and strong and has a score of years before age can even begin to undermine his ogrish vitality. Urg’s marriage is a constant source of joy for him and even though Kitkazza will not reveal her past to him Urg loves her to a fault and makes sure that her every wish is fulfilled. In turn Kitkazza’s adoration of her husband is subtler but there is no question of her steadfast devotion to the half-ogre. Urg hopes that his son might exhibit some of the magical talent of his parents but has not yet begun to train Jaken in the arcane arts, preferring that his son choose his own path when he is of age.
