Codswallop! Quote me saying that.

If you have to make things up to support your argument, I suggest you make them less easy to disprove than that.

Just a non-publishers point of view here but I've read this entire thread and I find some of the statements uninformed.

First although a Buyer may have read the open game lisence (it is reprinted in every book that contain OGC) it doesn't matter to him/her a spell from Tome & Blood is as useful as a spell from Relics & Rituals.Unless your planning on republishing you don't care and it doesn't effect your decision to buy it or not.

As for reprinting material found in various books that are open-game and why its not done more often with or without courtesy attached to it. Original material sells better than reprints. 90% or more of a books sales are in the first 90 days with the vast majority of those in the first 30.If someone were to decide to reprint Freeport it would take several months to re-layout and print it(the art is not open game.)sales would be minimal,so why.

You need to remember that 3rd edition is only 2 years old and any book worth purchasing is probably still available in a distrubutors warehouse or storeshelves if not in publishers warehouses.

I think 5-6 years down the line when these books start becoming hard to get is when you will start seeing mass reprints of other peoples open game content.

Here's an idea: put your money where your mouth is. Since you already said you could be successful as you have identified four areas of need, why dont you go do it. Then we will see. Who knows, maybe you are the undiscovered genius. But my prediction is that it doesnt quite work out that way.

That would, of course, have been the smart thing to say 3 pages of posts ago. And whether I do it or not is pretty much irrelevent. Someone will do it because there is a need. You could choose to take part, of course, but you I doubt you'll be able to co-opt it as you have been attempting to do with the OGL.

Right now you just are all talk, no action. And not even very good talk at that. [/B]

Correct on the first count. But why don't we just place all your posts and mine side-by-side? Whether our dear readers agree with me or you, I think they'll see an obvious qualitative difference. (I take it you have someone else edit your products?)

Oops! Almost forgot the smiley face. :D (I know you'll appreciate it, since it appears from your posts that you feel that is the sign of a stinging rebuttal.)

(And yes, Morrus, I was hasty in the way I worded that. You clearly stated that you believe asking permission was expected due to courtesy - not due to a a misreading of the OGL. However, you also backed away from that when I mention my plans to thank people for their OGC, but not ask permission first.)

The only continued purpose of this thread is for Nemesis to listen to himself blather and stroke his own ego.

Either that or we have well and truly crossed the line of a very successful troll.

Maybe Morrus doesn't feel it's right to shut down this thread himself, but for the love of God send another mod in...

A quick look at my posts will show that I have asked that question in a slightly different way. To paraphrase: "How much OGC (both the incorporated work of others and new original contribution) is necessary to use in your works from a marketing standpoint?" Even Orcus responded to that version.

You're both wrong (and probably feel threatened) by unrestricted use of the OGL. While WoTC allowed the creation of the OGL for those very reasons you mention, its ramifications are much wider. (And I remember who Monte is; I just don't worship him.)

And I haven't attacked anyone personally - only their positions- though I have tried to explain what I see as the ideological underpinnings of those positions. It's the respondents that seem threatened by these arguments. Maybe you should take some time to re-examine the assumptions your stance is based on.

Actually, I started this thread specifically to explore some ideas that were raised in another thread about the OGL. In that thread Morrus stated that he believed you have to ask permission (even though, of course, that invalidates the entire point of the license). He seemed to back off that here for a time. Orcus jumped on the bandwagon and added comments about "collegiality." However, his argument comes down to "use the OGL the way I say you should - not the way it is written."

It appears that those threatened by the OGL (some of whom, like Orcus, think of the d20 market and OGL as just speed bumps on their path to success) have chosen to rationalize the OGL in certain ways - and now attempt to restrict its use by informal methods.

OGC is not "other people's stuff." (And I don't know that I am "really smart," but it's certainly beginning to look that way - at least in relative terms.:))

What the heck are you talking about? And why are you being so offensive to those who are so obviously worthy of more respect then that? I'm not looking to add anymore trouble to this thread. I just don't understand why every so often, someone comes along, asks a question, receives helpful answers and then wants to argue.

If you can handle a little friendly advice, I'd step back, look at some of the things you've written and consider offering a few apologies. This IS a nice friendly place with decent, helpful people. There really is no point in being offensive.

And, yes, OGC IS "other people's stuff." That is why there is a license and Section 15.

Could be right.

My thoughts exactly. It's been fun, but Nemesis has had his day in the spotlight...time to say goodbye.

If another mod doesn't kill this thread, I will shortly.
