Using polymorph for a huge boost in AC

So true. After getting tired of dominating our psi-warrior back over to our team after he'd been dominated by bad guys, our seer (the psi-warrior's boss) invested in some helm that blocks dominations and also gives +4 to Will saves. He presented it to the psi-warrior last night and exclaimed "Here! Wear this, you fool."

Time to break out the Web spell :D! It sounds like the psychic warrior is a kick-butt melee warrior, but a simple Negate Psionics, targeted on him, takes down his buffs. Until 16th-level, that is; then a psychic warrior with a Con of 16 can manifest Ablating.

Oh yeah, big time. The psi-warrior and my character (a bladesinger) are the two melee powerhouses in the group and suffer from the same Achilles' Heel - dispel magic. Hurts him worse than me, though. Without his buffs he's a mere mortal, without my buffs I'm still a fighter, just with slightly lower hit points. Almion though, man, fights don't last longer than a couple rounds with him in the mix. Unless our DM gets unusually clever :D

OD&D Poly spells

Hey folks,

For those who are concerned with Poly Self/Other and are thinking to make house rule mods to it, I thought you might be interested in the way Poly Self and Other work in OD&D:

Polymorph Self
Range: 0 (Caster only)
Duration: 6 turns + 1 turn per level of the caster [1 OD&D turn = 10 minutes]
Effect: Caster may change shapes

This spell allows the caster to change shape, taking the physical form or another living creature. The Hit Dice of the new form must be equal to or less than the Hit Dice of the caster, or the spell will fail.

The caster's armor class, hit points, attack rolls, and saving throws do not change, and he does not gain special abilities (such as ghouls' paralysis) or special immunities of the new form; however, he does gain the natural physical abilities of the new form. For example, a spellcaster polymorphed into a frost giant has the strength of a frost giant and the ability to hurl boulders, but not the immunity from cold. A spellcaster polymorphed into a dragon could fly but would not be able to use any breath weapons or spells.

The spellcaster cannot cast spells while polymorphed into a different form. The spell lasts for the listed duration, or until dispelled, or until the caster is killed. This spell will not enable the caster to take the form of a specific individual (see polymorph other).

Polymorph Other
Range: 60'
Duration: Permanent until dispelled
Effect: Changes one living creature

This spell changes the victim into another living creature. The new form may have no more than twice as many Hit Dice as the original, or the spell will fail. The victim's hit points remain the same; an 8th level prince with 32 hit points could end up as a frong with 32 hit points.

Unlike the polymorph self spell, the polymorph other spell actually turns the victim into the new creature, giving him any and all special abilities of the new form, plus its tendencies and behavior. For example, a hobgoblin polymorphed into a mule with think and act like a mule.

This spell cannot create a duplicate of a specific individual, only a race or monster type. For example, a creature polymorphed into a 9th level fighter will indeed become a human, but not necessarily a fighter and no higher than 1st level.

The victim of this spell may make a saving throw vs. spells to avoid the effect. The effect lasts until dispelled, or until the creature dies.

Note that poly other is not only a killer buffup, it's also a literal killer spell. Turn enemy mages into squirrels, yay! This change would make it even more of a killer.

I love it when my players impress me with creative uses of spells. One time when I was DMing an OD&D campaign back in college (6+ years ago), one of the PCs had his Fly spell dispelled, sending him hurtling to the ground toward his death. The PC Elf cast a Web below to cushion the blow as much as possible. I was impressed by the unconventional use and would allow it except, as I told them, he was falling from so high up that that wouldn't be enough to save him. Just before he hit the ground and went splat, the PC Magic-User used a Wand of Polymorphing to polymorph him into a Troll so he would regenerate after hitting the ground. Because in OD&D turning your friend into a Troll means he's now actually a nasty Troll who wants to kill you made this somewhat dangerous. The second function of the Web was to temporarily restrain the Troll. As soon as it was about to break free of the Web (and was partially regenerated), they cast Dispel Magic to turn it back into their friend.

Incidentally, one of the ways I tried to regulate what the Magic-user could polymorph into was to tell him that he needed to have reasonable familiarity with the anatomy of a creature. It was kind of gruesome, but whenever the party would kill a new monster, he would claim the body and would dissect it on the spot if possible, or transport it home to do so later if necessary, so he could Polymorph into it in the future as desired.

Okay, make it a social-present game -- a game in which PCs have an existence outside of the dungeon.

A fighter is supposed to smell like sweat and iron -- I think the locals won't be surprised by that.

A fighter with green skins and disproportionate limbs, OTOH, is gonna look mighty like a demon to a lot of folks.

If you wanna House Rule it that way, the House Rules forum is over there. Since I'm willing to bite though...

Instead of dispelling the Polymorph, just Polymorph the Fighter back into himself. Bang, no bad aftertaste.

There's still pleny of Social opportunites: Explain you got this condition due to fighing some really bad Demons who bled on you and tainted your skin; Wax poetic about the sacrifices you made to stop the Mad Wizard from conquering the realm; It's just another battle scar and chicks love scars; It doesn't change your Charisma so just gut it out; A permament Illusion is only 1 level away from Poly, cast it and anyone who penetrates the Illusion tell them you do it to keep from scaring the children; "Shh, I'm in Disguise"; Live with it, if the farmers get upset who cares; You can get out of alot of barfights this way too. The role-playing social possibilites are endless.

Squirrels are quick and nimble, could be hard to catch, and I wouldn't want to take the chance of pissing off Nutkin. Turn them into Turtles, they Stack nicely in a backpack and they dont smush as eaisly if you want to take them prisoner.

How is roleplaying the reactions of NPCs appropriately a house rule? Explain that to me. Just because the NPCs in your campaign are less "rustic" and more forgiving than in Daniel's doesn't mean it's a houserule. You do point out some excellent counters to that problem that would also be fun roleplaying too.

As for me, I do think the main thing that broke Polymorph Other from the old editions was the chance of mentally becoming the creature too. Add that back in, and there would be a lot less people willing to be turned into monsters. As for Polymorph Self, maybe the duration just needs to be decreased.

A goldfish is better...can't hurt you or move, and can't breathe air. If you're LG or something, you can carry a fishbowl with you and then keep all your vanquished foes as pets.
