using polymorph to grow wings?

would any of you think it possible to use polymorph other to permanently give someone wings? I was thinking that if your a wizard and you study magic like mad then you would have to learn to alter spells a little. So why not be able to stop a polymorph halfway in and give somebody the wings of a young dragon or something? If anyone thinks this would be acceptable help me work out the pros and cons that would make it acceptable to a DM.

Thanks

As a DM, I'd allow a mage to research a new spell that could accomplish something like this. It's not out of the range of possibility. But I wouldn't let a mage do so with a spell that wasn't written to do so (such as Polymorph Other.)

Why not use permanency + alter self?

3E Alter Self let you 'grow wings'; 3.5 only lets you turn into a creature of the same type. So if you're a Humanoid, and you want wings, you need to be familiar with a winged Humanoid creature that you can turn into.

Or just make up a new spell, which lets you grow wings and fly, probably a 3rd level spell. Or use one that already exists somewhere, I'm sure it has been done before. :)

If you don't really want to alter things, you could just polymorph into an Avariel(winged Elves). Of course, this requires that they exist in the campaign world. :)
When you polymorph into something, you gain the average physical stats of the form you change into. So this could potentially be a sub-optimal method if gaining flight.
