D&D 5E Vampiric and Lycanthrope PCs?

I had a player playing a weretiger. I allowed the strength stat bump and limited the damage immunity to resistance until level 10. The character never progressed passed level 7 though. It was played from level 3 to level 7. The character was a rogue assassin class. The player did say that the damage resistance was nice and allowed her character to do more melee combat that she would have typically thought. Being a ST who has run Werewolf: The Apocalypse for a several years I felt comfortable with NPCs interacting with the PC weretiger in a social setting during a gibbous or full moon. I also, used the fact that a weretiger 'parent' would want to kill off it's offspring to keep the curse from spreading. Therefore an additional character flaw included the character being hunted. The net result, was a character that was slightly above the bar for combat situations, but tended to be more challenging in social interactions. In addition, the hunter tracking the PC resulted in several near misses between the hunter and prey. The hunter also used the social environment or legal system in the town the characters were in to flush the PC out into a vulnerable spot.

I had a player ask about playing a vampire character. After I read through the vampire in the MM, I came to the conclusion I would need to work with him to make a custom set of features on the character. The MM vampire limitations is not conducive to use as a PC. Since the player had been a long time Vampire: The Masquerade player and ST I figured we could grab some features from that game to design a level gated progression. The player concluded there would be more work than it's worth.
